✨ Join Us for a Meaningful Juneteenth Week Kickoff ✨

The City of Asheville is proud to partner with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County as they host a week of Juneteenth events celebrating freedom, history, and community.

📅 Tuesday, June 16 | 5:30–8 p.m.
📍 Stephens-Lee Community Center

Join us for Celebrating the Community, an evening of reflection, remembrance, and inspiration.

The program will feature the annual memorial honoring civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, who were murdered on June 21, 1964, while working to advance voting rights during Freedom Summer.

Attendees will also be among the first to view the debut of a new documentary highlighting the history and impact of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County. The film explores the life and legacy of Dr. Oralene Simmons, the creation of the Asheville Prayer Breakfast, and the Association’s lasting contributions to communities across Western North Carolina.

Celebrate Juneteenth!

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, Inc., in partnership with the City of Asheville will host and promote a week of free events to celebrate, remember, observe, and honor the feelings of hope and progress Juneteenth inspires. These events include community celebrations, music, food, and dancing, Asheville's Downtown After 5, and our celebration gala!

“Celebrating the Community” The annual memorial program of civil rights activists James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, who were murdered on June 21, 1964. And the debut of a documentary video on the history and work of the MLK Association, highlighting the life of Dr. Oralene Simmons, the creation of the Asheville Prayer Breakfast, and the impact the MLK Association has had on WNC.

We are excited to see the 2026 Juneteenth Celebration featured in this month’s The Urban News.

This year’s celebration, hosted by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, will honor the history, resilience, culture, and community that Juneteenth represents.

From honoring local changemakers and preserving Black history to community conversations, music, fashion, food, and fellowship, this week of events reflects the power of remembrance and the promise of progress.
