The Western Carolina Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative (WNC-CRCSI) is celebrating ten years of changing lives across the mountains! Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in North Carolina but is highly treatable when detected early. Services provided through programs like CRCSI have a significant impact in decreasing screening disparities and health disparities in the uninsured. We’re looking forward to another ten years facilitating access to care.

Dr. Mike Newcomer, founder of WNC-CRCSI, is speaking about the organization’s work on Thursday, November 12th at the 3rd Annual Western North Carolina Colorectal Prevention and Healthcare Summit. More details and free registration is available at https://mahec.net/home/event/78919

The Asheville Ski and Snowboard Club is partnering with WNC-CRCSI for a fundraiser featuring a showing of Warren Miller’s Days Off on Friday, November 6th at Asheville Community Theatre. The Western North Carolina Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative (WNC CRCSI), housed within the Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS), has been selected as a 2027 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) HANDS Distinguished Impact Award recipient. The HANDS Award for Distinguished Impact recognizes individuals and organizations whose work is creating lasting change in the field of digestive health.

As October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Western Carolina Medical Society reaffirms its solidarity with survivors of domestic assault, as well as survivors of sexual assault. We recognize, always, not only in moments of intense national conversation, the inherent dignity of each individual.

We encourage ongoing, open, and frank discussions of human rights, safety, and personal autonomy among families, colleagues, communities, and government entities.

Further, we salute agencies such as Helpmate and Our Voice here in Asheville which work to offer empathy and hope to survivors. Each of us must adhere to a strict zero tolerance policy regarding these issues which are, indeed, matters of public health and wellbeing.

Mark your calendars for this free gathering for our members, families, provider partners, and community partners at Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue in downtown Asheville. This year's theme is Fall in Love with WCMS! We live in one of the most beautiful regions of the country by any definition, and we want to celebrate all that beauty represents.

We're proud to feature provider performers Mission: Accomplished, face painting by Caricatures by Cody, delicious food and drink by Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue, art projects, a photo booth, and raffle baskets from local businesses across our region.

This week's Testimonial Tuesday comes from Karen, our executive director. Helene is at the forefront of our minds this week as we recognize two years since its devastating impact across our region.

"I will never forget the gnawing ache: seeking internet access and water, attempting to get calls through to my daughters, trying to locate my staff, knowing our community was deeply and truly shaken. I will also never forget the rallying of the human spirit. Police officers shuttled medical equipment to our office for distribution. A WCMS employee drove hundreds of miles over uncertain terrain to deliver supplies. Calls came from funders and reporters to get my "on the ground" assessment. I hauled water so we could wash our hands at work and flush the toilet at home.

Traffic jams and search helicopters.

Donors sent funding, saying "Put it where it can do the most good." WCMS distributed $87,000 in rental assistance, food, and transportation support. We built a relief program in days, working alongside new partners to make dollars go farther. Out of ruin and pain, the people of western North Carolina proved that the storm was big, but we are bigger, we are stronger, together."

WCMS provides care for our entire mountain community, from facilitating access to care to interpretation services to provider mental health care just to name a few. Your ongoing support of our organization ensures that we can continue to connect our community to care and services across the mountains.

We love getting out into the community and finding our folks wherever they are.

The All Souls Counseling Mental Health Matters 5K at UNC Asheville brought together community partners from across our region to remind folks that, yes, mental health is a crucial part of our health journeys.

It was a fantastic weekend; stay tuned next Monday for a retrospective of our next set of weekend adventures!
