WCMS is in the spotlight on Spotlight Carolina as Karen and Niki sat down with host Nelson Weston to talk about the myriad of ways our organization moves medical mountains across the region. We are grateful to our partners at WLOS News 13 for featuring our hard work!

The spotlight will run during the noon news on Friday, June 5th, and will later be featured on the website.

We are so thankful to all our Project Access provider partners who contributed to free and reduced specialty care in 2025. The names on this image, also featured in this week's Mountain XPress, represent more than just donations of time, expertise, and services; they represent the power of community collaboration.

Without our community partners, donors, and volunteer providers, this program would not exist. As we celebrate Project Access's 30th Anniversary, we invite you to partner with us to ensure access to healthcare remains for our most vulnerable WNC neighbors. Donate or volunteer with Project Access today!

30 YEARS OF PROJECT ACCESS; In 1996, a local Buncombe County physician decided enough was enough. Dr. Suzanne Landis recognized that patients needed specialty care they could not afford. Folks would pay for an office visit but neglect costly imaging, surgery, and labs. Their health and well-being was suffering due to lack of insurance coverage and increasing costs. Dr. Landis took matters into her own hands and started visiting local providers, imploring them to donate their time, care, and energy. Miraculously, they did and still continue to do so.

This is the power and the story of Project Access.

Over the years, thousands of Buncombe and Madison County neighbors have enrolled in Project Access. Neighbors who are uninsured and Medicaid ineligible have gained access to free or reduced specialty healthcare totaling more than $200 million. Her brainchild is a pillar of the healthcare community in our area and has been replicated 200 times nationwide, all because a dedicated physician dared to put a bold idea into action.

Project Access is rooted in the belief that everyone, absolutely everyone, deserves the dignity of medical care. Without our community partners, donors, and volunteer providers, this program would not continue to exist.

Won’t you take the bold step to partner with us to ensure that Project Access continues to positively impact WNC neighbors for another 30 years? Donate now by visiting https://www.mywcms.org/ and clicking on DONATE NOW so we can keep this critical program going.

Graduation season is upon us, and we are beyond proud of our two Class of 2026 graduates!

🎓 Marina Stutes, our Director of Finance and Operations, is graduating from the University of North Carolina Asheville after knocking it out of the park as a business and accounting student. Her list of achievements inside and outside of the classroom is truly remarkable, from being our rock in the office to earning volunteer accolades for tax return preparation , to making the Dean's and Chancellor's list multiple times. We are so proud of her!

🎓 Jasper Everingham, our Spring 2026 Project Access Intern, is graduating from Warren Wilson College with degrees in Outdoor Leadership & Social Work. Not only did they double major as an excellent student, they worked with us on a crucial project looking at barriers to access for care, as a reporter for the WWC newspaper, as a community engagement team member, and played Ultimate Frisbee. They were such a joy to have with us this spring and we're excited to see how they're going to change the world going forward!

This month marks Mental Health Awareness Month. All throughout May we'll be sharing resources for folks to utilize to talk about, lift the stigma from, and raise awareness about the importance of mental health care. As a community, we can work towards that destigmatization of mental health and mental health care.
