Today I was asked the question, “what does Superman mean to you?” I had never really thought about it in those terms but here is what I said Superman means to me.
“I grew up watching Christopher Reeve on a regular basis with my grandmother who was a huge Superman fan. She had me convinced that she knew him because of her love of the character. I will always feel a connection with her through Superman.
Superman to me is a light in a dark world. No matter how dark and evil the world around him is, he is always the beacon of light and good. He is the one that people can look towards in times of trouble to be the rescue. He really is the embodiment of hope, justice, and everything good we hold dear. With all his strength he is still down to earth, friendly, loving and genuine. When I play the character at events that is what I bring to him because that is the Superman I always wanted to meet. I like to provide a smile and a moment of hope to people, especially those who have it hard in life. I may have a normal life and a day to day job but I am Superman in the eyes of kids I meet. I can be that hero that I remember watching with my grandmother, the character that smiles at the camera as he flies off in the last shot.”
