April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month—and we’re celebrating the businesses that show up, step in, and make a real difference in our community.

Recently, brought their team to support in Black Mountain—rolling up their sleeves to help care for a space that serves hundreds of neighbors each week. From planting herbs to refreshing the building, their impact was immediate and meaningful.

We’re grateful to Aeroflow Health and Appalachian Community Relief for showing what’s possible when businesses and community partners come together with purpose. This work was even featured by WLOS—a powerful reminder that local action creates lasting change.

Recovery happens when communities come together.

Valley Hope Foundation is seeking volunteers to support large-scale aid and food distribution efforts serving families impacted by Hurricane Helene. Each week, 5,000–8,000 families receive essential supplies through this work, made possible by dedicated volunteers who sort, load, and distribute food and aid with care and compassion.

This is a meaningful opportunity to support disaster recovery, strengthen food security, and stand alongside neighbors as they rebuild.

What does community partnership look like in action? At A.C. Reynolds Middle School, it showed up as 9.5 tons of gravel — delivered with intention, care, and relationship building by the Metropolitan Sewerage Department.

In our latest story, we highlight how this simple act transformed a school’s outdoor space into a gathering place where students sit, talk, and connect — reminding us that schools are more than classrooms; they’re community hubs.

Sometimes, impact begins with a ride.

Hood Huggers Foundation is seeking volunteer drivers to support participants in workforce development programs by providing transportation to job sites and classes. Reliable transportation is a critical link to employment, education, and economic stability—and volunteers play a key role in making these opportunities accessible.

This is a meaningful way to support workforce pathways, community wellness, and long-term economic mobility across Asheville.

"When a disaster hits, you don’t go by selecting who can help and who cannot." – Antonio Garcia, UWABC Board Member

At United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, that’s exactly how we operate. We don’t cherry-pick who helps—because everyone in our community has a role to play, and unity is the way forward.

When Hurricane Helene struck, we didn’t stop once the lights came back on. Beyond mobilizing volunteers, funds, and resources, we partnered with local recovery leaders—and brought them into our own leadership.

Antonio Garcia is one of those leaders. As Program Manager for CORE’s Western NC Home Rebuild, he’s been on the ground in Buncombe County every day. With support from UWABC, CORE has already rebuilt 50 homes in Swannanoa and is working on 70 more.

Antonio says it best:
"If our community didn’t come together, if our leadership didn’t come together, if all these organizations did not come together, it would be another story today."

Through your gifts and volunteerism, you are part of this story—helping ensure recovery, resiliency, and hope are at the heart of our community. 💛

We’re proud to welcome our third AmeriCorps NCCC Crew, Grizzly 7, to Buncombe County — a team of nine dedicated young leaders committed to supporting long-term Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

In partnership with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, All Hands and Hearts, CORE Response, and Valley Hope Foundation, this crew will focus on home rebuilding and supply distribution, helping families move from crisis toward stability.

Their arrival represents more than additional capacity — it reflects the power of cross-sector collaboration, national service, and local leadership coming together to meet urgent community needs.

We’re grateful for their commitment and look forward to the impact they’ll make across our region.

Rebuilding after disaster takes more than time—it takes community.

Valley Hope Foundation is seeking skilled volunteers to support ongoing recovery efforts in the Swannanoa River Valley following Hurricane Helene. Volunteers with experience in chainsaw and tree work will help assess damage, clear downed trees, and restore safety for families whose homes and properties were severely impacted.

This is a hands-on opportunity to apply your skills where they matter most and make a direct difference in long-term recovery efforts across Western North Carolina.

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is proud to be the premier charity partner for the iDaph Asheville Marathon & Half—and we’re inviting the community to volunteer on Race Day.

For every volunteer hour given, iDaph Events will donate $25 directly to UWABC, supporting youth opportunity, Community Schools, United for Youth partners, and long-term recovery efforts.

This is a rare chance to turn volunteer time into direct funding while being part of one of Asheville’s most energizing community events.
