If it is hard for you to hear that God is a Father, you are not being difficult. You are being honest. Your earthly father left a print on you, good or bad. The Holy Spirit wants to untether it and seal a new one.

Sermon recap: Pruned to Bear (John 15:1–3). Week one of The True Vine.

Jesus says, I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. That means the hands holding the knife are a father's hands. He is not taking a mower to your life. He holds a pruning knife, and he decided you are worth the work.

Three truths from the text. The gardener is your Father. He cuts carefully, not to punish but for fruit. And you are already clean, because of the word he has spoken to you. Affliction is the handle. The Word of God is the blade.

Try this week: when something uncomfortable comes, run to the Word before you ask why. Then let someone in. Join a group, or write pruning on your connect card and we will follow up with you.

God is not a butcher. He is a pruner.

We opened The True Vine on Sunday with a rose bush and a mower. Pastor Justin took his down to the ground because it was not worth the work. The Father made the opposite call about you. He holds a pruning knife, not a mower, and He decided you are worth the process.

Three things from John 15:1-3:

-The gardener is a Father. The hands on the knife are His. v 1
-He cuts carefully. Sometimes the thing He removes was good. Sometimes it was your strength. v 2
-You are already clean. The pruning is proof you are His, not proof He left. v 3

Then the turn. The pruning is never punishment, because the punishment was already paid on the cross. "For he knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust" (Psalm 103:14).

Save this for the next hard week. Affliction is the handle. The Word is the blade. Open the Bible, get in a group, pray desperately. You are not a dead branch. You are a dormant one.
