In the world of Girl Scouts, the Gold Award is the ultimate achievement, and one only about 3,000 girls–about 6% of Girl Scouts–will receive each year. Kaelyn Hendricks, a junior at Arlington Tech, is one of them. She reached out to Boolean Girl with an idea for a Gold Award project, and we knew it would be something special.

To be successful in AI and other future-looking technologies, you need fundamental skills. Just like you can't become a lawyer or doctor if you can't read, you can't be an AI creator without knowing how to code. To build a future where AI is safe and accessible for everyone, we need more AI creators.

We offer four camps that will help children learn these fundamentals while also introducing them to the world of AI, developing skills in AI creation, and understanding its social and ethical impacts. Our newest advanced AI camp, Creating & Using AI, is ideal for students who have taken an intro Python class either with Boolean Girl or in school and are eager to go further by writing Python code to create AI applications.

Eliana, a student in the after-school Clubhouse at Montessori Public School of Arlington (Arlington Public Schools), recently showcased her invention, the "Wolf-Scent" at the Virginia Invention Expo. The device, similar to an AirTag, was built during Clubhouse using a micro:bit.

The after-school Clubhouse is run by Renee Shaw and led by student-instructor, Kaelyn Hendricks, a Girl Scout working toward her Gold Award through volunteering with Boolean Girl.

Eliana received a scholarship each session--funded by Battelle--and now "fully sees herself as an engineer and coder" according to her teacher, Ms. Shaw.

Looking ahead, 2026 will be an important year of growth and transition for Boolean Girl. In January, we were excited to welcome Lauren Bell as our Associate Executive Director. After more than 11 years, Brian Moran will be retiring in December 2026, and Lauren will step into the role of Executive Director.

Lauren brings nearly two decades of experience in corporate philanthropy, marketing, and nonprofit leadership to Boolean Girl. Most recently, Lauren served as Executive Director of the Western Union Foundation, where she led a team managing a $6M annual budget, raised over $3M per year, and built strategic partnerships with philanthropic organizations worldwide while achieving record highs in both fundraising and employee engagement along the way.

Her path to Boolean Girl is also a personal one. As a girl who loved math and science but who never quite saw a clear road to a career in computer science or engineering, Lauren understands firsthand what's at stake when young people lack visible role models and on-ramps in STEM. She is deeply committed to building a different future for the girls and underrepresented youth in Boolean Girl's programs.

You may have spotted Lauren over the past few months at Boolean Girl Clubhouses and other events, and she will be joining us for Camp this summer. She is excited to join the team and looks forward to meeting more of the Boolean Girl family!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Lauren to the Boolean Girl team and supporting her as she leads us into our next chapter!

Boolean Girl recently joined Polk Elementary's STEM Day to work with 5th graders on a hands-on introduction to artificial intelligence. Students used the micro:bit—a small programmable device—to collect real data, train their own machine learning models, and then build AI-powered apps using what they created. It was a fantastic session that showed students they have the skills to make AI work for them.
