This month's Member Spotlight features Muzzamil Shahzad, Senior Engineer at MP Materials, who has been an active CI member since 2022 and was instrumental in bringing MP Materials into The Chlorine Institute community. His leadership reflects a commitment to process safety, operational excellence, and collaboration across industries.

At MP Materials, Muzzamil supports the commissioning and optimization of chlor-alkali systems that help strengthen the domestic rare earth mineral supply chain in the United States—a unique intersection of chlor-alkali expertise and critical mineral processing that is becoming increasingly important to America's manufacturing and clean energy future.

Nushat Thomas is the Cybersecurity Division Director within EPA’s Officer of Water Emergency and Cybersecurity, leading a team of cybersecurity analysts to ensure water and wastewater systems are prepared to respond and recover from cyber incidents. She joined the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2009 as a member of the Water Security Division. Before joining EPA, she was employed as an Environmental Analyst responsible for managing the environmental compliance programs and permits at the Potomac River coal-fired generating plant. Prior to this, she served on active duty in the United States Army as an Environmental Science Engineering Officer at Fort Bragg, NC, where she served as Chief of the Installations’ Environmental Health Section. She continues to serve within the District of Columbia Army National Guard as a Medical Detachment Commander. She has earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Johnson C. Smith University, a M.S. in Environmental Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.

🎤 Emergency response professionals… this one is for you!

At the upcoming CI Fall Meeting educational sessions, Nicholas Janton and Richard Davey will provide an overview of CHEMTREC's emergency response, crisis management, consulting, and digital incident management capabilities that support Chlorine Institute members before, during, and after an incident.

Nick has over 20 years of hazardous materials emergency response experience in Tucson, Arizona, where he served as a Hazmat Technician, Hazardous Waste Manager, and technical expert for hazardous materials incidents. He holds a B.S. in Public Administration from Liberty University and is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).

Rich has worked with hundreds of public and private sector organizations, helping them navigate complex risk, emergency response, and compliance challenges around the world. He works closely with CHEMTREC clients to understand their unique requirements, build trusted relationships, and translate complex regulatory and technical issues into practical business solutions and opportunities. Rich holds a Master of Science in Environmental Strategy from University of Surrey, and an Executive MBA from Henley Business School.
