May is Electrical Safety Month!

Did you know large amounts of electricity are required to produce chlorine? That’s why electrical safety is a critical part of chlor-alkali operations and maintenance. OSHA’s electrical standards are designed to help protect employees who work around electrical hazards.

As partners in safety, CI members developed Pamphlet 139: Electrical Safety in Chlor-Alkali Cell Facilities. This resource provides guidance on identifying electrical hazards, understanding electrical health effects on the body, implementing preventative measures, and administering first aid.

Visit the CI bookstore to obtain a copy of Pamphlet 139: https://www.chlorineinstitute.org/products/?SearchText=electrical

For additional electrical safety information and resources, visit OSHA: https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/electrical/index.html

As Drinking Water Week comes to a close, a huge shoutout to the operators, maintenance teams, engineers, managers, and manufacturing support functions who make safe drinking water possible every day via the production of essential disinfectants. Also, we express our sincere appreciation to our water utility members who operate on the front lines of public health protection.

Yes, we know there are alternative disinfection strategies—but they can’t stand alone. When it comes to protecting public health at scale, chlorine and chlorine‑based disinfectants remain the undefeated champions. Reliable. Effective. Proven.
