Each spring, Kids Ocean Day engages students in California communities who learn about how their neighborhoods are connected to watersheds, beaches, and the ocean.

Learn more: https://oceanday.org

The program includes school assemblies and classroom lessons that teach students how trash in neighborhoods travels to the coast and ways to reduce plastic pollution culminating in a beach field trip in which they take a “stand in the sand” and send a message through an aerial art project.

The KOD team includes:

On the morning of June 2, 750 local students spent their school day being stewards of the coastal dunes during the 21st Annual Kids Ocean Day event at the Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, South Spit of the Humboldt Bay. 🌊 After spending the day restoring dune habitat and picking up trash, students, teachers, and volunteers formed an aerial art image of marine invertebrates with the message "Coast for All.” ✨ The aerial art image was designed by Jess Barger and captured by photographer Justin Legge via drone.

Friends of the Dunes organized the Kids Ocean Day event, which took place locally as part of the statewide Adopt-a-Beach program, funded by the California Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail Grant Program. 🐚 Kids Ocean Day is a significant day of action and celebration that aims to empower young individuals to become nature heroes. 🦸‍♀️ Humboldt County joined four other locations along the California coast in hosting student-led beach cleanups and awe-inspiring aerial art displays. 🌿 These events lead up to the globally recognized World Ocean Day, empowering collective efforts to protect and preserve our precious ocean ecosystems. 💓

Thank you to our incredible partners, dedicated volunteers, and the amazing students who made this event possible! 🌻 We also extend a special thank you to the Bureau of Land Management’s Arcata Field Office, who were all hands on deck, making Kids Ocean Day a success. 🙌

Join us for this beginner-friendly workshop that invites participants to create simple handmade book forms while exploring non-anthropocentric storytelling centered on the moon 🌙 and her relationship to life on Earth. 🌎 Through folding, binding, writing, and collective reflection, participants will experiment with ways of imagining ecosystems and interdependence beyond human-centered narratives. The workshop also includes a guided walk with Friends of the Dunes, encouraging participants to engage directly with coastal landscapes as they learn about the coastal ecosystem. 🌊

Blue Rachapradit is a multidisciplinary storyteller whose practice centers on staging a re-encountering with dominant narratives through embodied and ecofeminist points of view. Often engaging with mythological and historical retelling, she asks the spectator to reconsider how dominant hegemonies have warped our sense of interrelations. Her works span video, performance, and installation art and have been shown internationally and in the US.
