Northcoast Regional Land Trust

Northcoast Regional Land Trust The Northcoast Regional Land Trust works to conserve the wild and working landscapes we all love.

The Northcoast Regional Land Trust was formed in 2000 by a diverse group of people with backgrounds in land use planning, ranching, farming, fisheries, forestry and others concerned with protecting the California North Coast’s extraordinary environment and quality of life. We work with conservationists, ranchers, farmers, timberland managers, natural resource scientists, environmental advocates, a

nd residents to establish a legacy of protected land to help shape a sustainable future for our region’s family-owned ranches, farms and forests.

Butler Valley Ranch is a 2,440-acre working landscape that was permanently protected by a conservation easement completed in 2024. The ranch features sweeping views, rich wildlife habitat, and a blend of agricultural and forested lands that reflect the region's natural abundance. 🌿

🌱 It’s California Invasive Species Action Week!🌱

Managing invasive species is one of the most important ways we can protect local ecosystems. At Freshwater Farms Reserve, we’re currently tackling three-cornered leek (Allium triquetrum), an invasive plant in the onion family that is spreading throughout Humboldt County. With the help of dedicated volunteers, tarps, and plenty of mulch, we’re working to block sunlight and stop this invasive species from gaining ground.

We’re so grateful for the volunteers who make this work possible and organizations like that help keep our local landscapes healthy and resilient. 💚

Want to be part of the solution? Join us on July 19 at Freshwater Farms Reserve and help make a difference! Visit ncrlt.org for event details and registration.

✨Meet Fancy ✨

To kick off the Tails from the Land series, we would like to introduce Fancy! Fancy is a border collie who calls Price Creek Ranch home. This 1,280-acre ranch has been permanently protected by a conservation easement since 2006, and Fancy is an important part of the team that helps keep it running.

Fancy has overcome many challenges in her short five years of life. When she was seven months old, Fancy was in an accident on the property. She was rushed to the vet, who told her owners that due to the swelling in her brain she would likely not survive and if she did she would remain blind. At only seven months old, her family wanted to give her a chance, so they brought her to an emergency vet in San Rafael that gave her a CT Scan, ran tests, and fit her with an IV for fluids.

The CT scan didn’t come back as hoped. Fancy had multiple fractures in her skull, broken bones in her nose and face, and the question of if her vision would ever return. Luckily, none of the fractures were pressing on her brain, but all that could be done was try to get her to eat. With some canned chicken and patience, Fancy finally ate….progress! Fancy and her family then headed home. Every day she gained strength, then her vision returned in one eye. But this does not slow her down! Fancy is smart, active, inquisitive, and shares a special bond with her owners. Today, she is happy, healthy, and helpful on the ranch. As her family says: “Our pets don’t just become a part of a routine, they become a part of who we are. They are all loved as if they are our children…our family.”

Fun Fact: Fancy is named after the Reba McEntire song! 💛
