Yesterday, I learned that Professor Galidikas had passed, and I was not able to find any words to share. Today, I still cannot. Maybe as I process I will write more. For now, it is a loss in the primate community, and beyond. She was the last of the surviving “Trimates” or “Leakey’s Angels”. It was only recently that we lost Jane Goodall and I couldn’t help but realize the Professor was soon to follow. Diane Fossey, Jane Goodall, and Professor Galdikas, all of the original generation of great ape field pioneers has come to an end. It feels a momentous time, not only for her passing but for an era. An era that was so influential in the primate and conservation world, in my life as a primate conservationist, and countless others. *These ladies reminded us daily of our connection to nature, that we are nature. *
The Professor leaves behind her family, the Orangutan Foundation, and so many local Dayak’s and Indonesians whom have all known her simply as Ibu, mother. At this time I am holding my Dayak friends and family in my heart. Sending love and hugs to all in Pangkalan Bun & beyond. 🌲 🦧 🕊️ 🪽
