The Orange County Board of County Commissioners voted 6-1 on Monday to approve a tourist development tax funding plan that includes $12 million for the Orange Audubon Natural History Museum at Apopka Birding Park.

At yesterday's 5-hour Board of County Commissioners meeting, Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings secured the approval for 13 projects to be supported by Tourist Development Tax funds.

The Tourist Development Tax (TDT), sometimes called the “bed tax,” added on to hotel room bills, has brought in millions each year to Orange County. Florida statutes govern the expenditure of this money by the County. Many Orange County residents have been lobbying to use it to help the county’s big problems of transportation and affordable housing. Unfortunately, that will require a change in statute by the Florida legislature, something brought forward last session by Representative Carlos Guillermo-Smith, without success.

Twelve of the projects had been recommended by a 32-member task force with appointees from all of the county commissioners and representatives from many Orange County cities. A UCF project was added at the request of several commissioners from the August 25th first presentation of the Task Force recommendations.

Chaired by Orange County's first mayor Linda Chapin, the Task Force spent long volunteer hours viewing applicant presentations, evaluating and ranking the projects. Starting in July, the application process took months and all presentations were shown on Orange TV and available on the Orange County, Florida Government YouTube channel. The results, that “spread the wealth” to a wider variety of projects than in the past will be transformative in creating new venues to bring visitors to Orange County, according to Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings.

Orange Audubon Society is thrilled that our Orange Audubon Natural History Museum at Apopka Birding Park was among the 13 projects approved.
