RAISE employees William and Cody, with their coaches, Amy and Sarah, met in the FWAF Apopka Community Garden on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to share with each other the environments in which they work, the progress they have made, and to create bonding, awareness, appreciation for each others' worksites, friendship, learning and solidarity. It was a beautiful day, and everyone learned something, including more about each other, which deepens everyone's experience. Thank you to All! We love this collaboration and engagement with you all. ⏰ TODAY IS THE DAY!!! (see below for our voter recs) Elections are here, and so is our chance to change our communities for the better. These midterms are incredibly important to our future. Whoever is in the house and the senate representing YOU has the power to create policies that determine how your family, how your business, how your school, and how your neighborhood experiences the next few years.

❌ FWAF encourages you to vote NO on Amendments 1, 2, and 3. These amendments take the money that you pay in taxes and take it out of your community. Instead of fixing the roads, lowering taxes, or funding healthcare and housing for Floridians struggling with an affordability crisis, up to 25% of the state's revenue will sit in a "rainy-day fund", racking up to $16.4 billion over 22 years where it could be used for things that Floridians did not agree to. We recently saw this kind of "executive decision" with emergency funds used to construct a detention camp in the Everglades, which caused appalling international human rights violations, flopped completely, and wasted emergency funds in a state known for its devastating hurricanes.

Amendment 3 especially is a trap designed to make you cut the services you need to survive and thrive-- like fire departments, EMTs, libraries, and recreation centers. By raising the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000, only the rich whose homes are valued that high will benefit by not having to pay their fair share, and the ONE-THIRD of Floridians who rent their homes will see only cut services. If 60% of Floridians vote yes on this, we will see slower response time from emergency services, older fire engines not being replaced, libraries and community centers closed. VOTE NO!

The Farmworker Association of Florida is deeply saddened by the passing of Marty Mesh, a visionary, brilliant, dedicated, hard-working, and creative force for good in the movement for just and sustainable and organic agriculture. His work and his vision encompassed much more than organic ag. Even as Executive Director of Florida Organic Growers for many years, everything Marty did included a commitment to social and farmworker justice. Marty worked with and included FWAF in projects, policy advocacy, presentations, and in solidarity for more than two decades. Marty will be sorely missed by the many people and lives he touched, locally, nationally and even internationally. Rest in Peace, Marty. Our deep gratitude for all you did and for the kind of person you were. We thank you!

STATEMENT from the FARMWORKER ASSOCIATION OF FLORIDA
DOLORES HUERTA – PRESENTE!!

The inimitable, undaunted, incomparable, irrepressible, and always resilient Dolores Huerta left her earthly body on Wednesday, October 28th. She was 96 years old. In her wake, she left for all of us a powerful, unforgettable, and lasting legacy of unfailing commitment to justice – for farmworkers, for immigrants, for women, for people of color, for the poor and disadvantaged, for children and for all who have known oppression, discrimination, exclusion and injustice. She was “a force of nature” in her fearless and tireless work to believe in, to organize, to collaborate with, meet with, talk to, stand beside, and inspire people of all races, creeds, colors, genders, and social classes even when she put herself at risk. She lived as an example to all of us of recognizing our common humanity, and in so doing, she exemplified and emanated peace, authenticity, openness, honesty, integrity, faithfulness, and truth. Her example is one we all aspire to follow.

Today, even though we mourn her passing, we recognize the powerful legacy Dolores Huerta has left us, and the responsibility and commitment we owe and we own to carry forward her work for justice, that today is more important now than ever.

Dolores Huerta will forever be a beacon of light that guides us and countless others who carry on the struggle. Dolores lives again, every time we lift our hands and shout “¡Sí, Se Puede!”

Dolores, in your spirit – La Lucha Sigue! Siempre!

Through our collaboration with the RAISE program, new relationships have been formed, friendships made, and good energy has been brought to our Community Garden and to our Apopka office. This past Tuesday, our two RAISE "teams" met at the office to make the connections and share each others' work projects. William and coach Amy from the Community Garden met with Cody and coach Sarah came together to share their experiences and their friendships.

On October 17, FWAF Organizers in Homestead combined an update on the Community Garden activities with a "Charla" on Heat Stress, including on prevention and protection against heat illness and even death in the workplace and protection from working outside and with exposure in the heat and the direct sun. Some of the workers shared their personal experiences of dehydration in the workplace. FWAF staff distributed long-sleeve shirts, bandanas, water bottles, and lip balm to everyone. Heat Stress Protection is a core issue of the Farmworker Association to protect our communities and families. Workers need national heat stress protections.
