🌳 BIG TREE HUNT COUNTY WINNER 🌳

This week, we are celebrating the Big Tree Hunt winner for Jackson County!
🏆 Tree Species: Northern red oak (Quercus rubra)
📏 Circumference: 279.4 inches
📍 Location: Jackson
🌱 Nominated by: Victoria Lamport Brown

This northern red oak was identified as the largest tree submitted in Jackson County during our 2023–2025 contest. It was also recognized as a Potential State Champion and later earned a place in the Michigan Big Tree Register through the Michigan Botanical Society's Big Tree Program, ranking second in the state for its species!

🍁 Northern red oaks are known for their beautiful fall colors, with leaves that can turn shades of red, reddish-brown, and russet. As Michigan's fall colors begin to show, it's a great time to appreciate these native trees and the beauty they bring to our communities.

We’ had an incredible weekend planting trees, and we hope you did too! This Saturday, volunteers in Plainwell got their hands in the dirt and planted 40 trees with us!

Thank you so much to our volunteers, who put the work in with us - including the City Manager at City of Plainwell, Justin Lakamper, we love an opportunity to see City staff getting to work with us and the community! We are so grateful to Plainwell for welcoming this project, and Consumers Energy Foundation for helping to make today’s plantings, and many more tree-planting projects across our state, possible.
As Michigan’s only statewide nonprofit dedicated to tree planting and education, ReLeaf Michigan is honored to connect people, places, and trees—one community at a time. 💚
Fall planting isn’t over yet! Join us for our next planting events in Monroe on 10/17, or Kalkaska and Warren on 10/24! You can make a difference right in your community—sign up at www.releafmichigan.org/events
