Prison Creative Arts Project

Prison Creative Arts Project Bringing those impacted by the justice system & the U-M community together since 1990.

The Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) was founded in 1990 with the mission to collaborate with incarcerated adults, incarcerated youth, urban youth and the formerly incarcerated to strengthen our community through creative expression. Housed in the University of Michigan’s Residential College, faculty and students work with community members both inside and outside prisons to engage in workshops

in theatre, dance, visual art, creative writing, slam poetry, and music. Annually, PCAP hosts one of the largest prisoner art exhibitions in the world and publishes a literary journal of writing by incarcerated authors. With arts programming and events year round, the organization serves as a creative hub for those with links to the criminal justice system, community volunteers, faculty, students, and university staff. We welcome your opinions, and encourage open discussion about the topics we post. If we become aware of messages that contain advertising, are off-topic, use offensive or inappropriate language, are intended to defame, infringe someone's rights, or are a violation of law, we reserve the right to remove them.

One of the most meaningful parts of the Annual Exhibition is helping every artist feel seen. Most won’t be able to visit the gallery in person, but your words can still reach them.
After viewing this year’s exhibition in person at the Duderstadt Gallery or online, share a letter with an artist whose piece stayed with you. Your message can make their whole year.Letter submissions are open until May 1st check the link in bio for more details.
