Spiritism, Spiritist Doctrine, Kardecism, or Kardecist Spiritism is a religious, philosophical, mediumistic, and modern spiritualist doctrine codified by the French pedagogue Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, who used the pseudonym Allan Kardec. He coined the term "spiritism" in 1857 [1] [2] and defined it as "the doctrine founded on the existence, manifestations, and teaching of spirits." Although not recognized as a science, [3] Kardec said that spiritualism combines scientific, philosophical and religious aspects, [4] [5] seeking a better understanding not only of the tangible universe, but also of the transcendent universe. The doctrine is based on five "basic works," called the Spiritist Codification, published by Kardec between 1857 and 1868. The so-called "complementary" works are also added, such as What is Spiritism ?, Spiritist Magazine and Posthumous Works.
