The Pittsfield Township Historical Society: Overview

The Pittsfield Township Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Pittsfield Township and the traditions of peoples who have lived here and/or traversed the historical roads -- the old Sauk Trail and Maumee-Saginaw Trail -- which cross in Pittsfield Township. Once the home of mastodons and buffalo, Pitt

sfield Township has been a crossroads of mid-America, from ancient times to modern day, a heritage that reflects and encapsulates most of the major transitions of the last 10,000 years. It is this rich heritage that the historical society works to document, preserve where possible, and bring alive again for the edification and appreciation of current and future generations. The Pittsfield Township Historical Society is a tax-exempt organization under both federal and state law. All contributions to the society are tax deductible. The historical society currently is building an endowment to further the work of the society. The historical society would appreciate your participation, contributions of historical documents and objects, as well as financial contributions to the endowment. Thanks to Judy Van Poperin for a great talk today about Revolutionary War soldiers who have Michigan counties named for them: William Crawford, Andrew Jackson, Anthony Wayne and James Monroe. The very well researched and informative presentation was enjoyed by the audience, some of whom braved the storm to get there. Along with Judy, we enjoyed welcoming her husband Keith and service dog Sunny (who is very happy and seemed interested in the meeting's refreshments).

Join us next month at StoryPoint-Saline on February 22, 2-4 p.m. when we'll welcome Civil War Re-enactor Rob Stone presenting "The Civil War Soldier’s Life."

01/25/2026

The weather outside may be frightful today (1/25/26), but we're still on for our delightful program at StoryPoint-Saline by Cindy Van Poperin of the DAR of Michigan. She'll tell us about Michigan counties named for Revolutionary War generals. This free event from 2-4 p.m. is open to the public at StoryPoint-Saline, 6230 South State Street, Saline, Michigan 48176.

Our speaker for the evening is Beverly Fish, who writes,
"I am looking forward to speaking on the involvement of women in the Civil War. I will be speaking on the overall efforts to support the troops and focus on a few Michigan women such as Laura Haviland , Anna Howard Shaw and Sojourner Truth. I have a master's degree in Women's Studies and History from Eastern Michigan University and taught at The College for Creative Studies, Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan. As a member of the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, I have written and presented on the life of Sojourner Truth and other Michigan women to many organizations across the state."
