Please remember: never leave a child alone in a vehicle. Not for a minute, not while running inside, not with the air conditioning on. Temperatures inside a car can rise dangerously fast, even on mild days.

Look before you lock. Put your phone, purse, or shoe in the back seat. If you see a child alone in a vehicle, call 911 immediately. One moment of distraction can become a lifetime tragedy.

This year, 5 children have died in hot cars nationwide, with 3 incidents reported in the past two days, a tragic reminder that we can all take steps to help prevent hot car deaths. It only takes a few minutes for a car to heat up and become deadly to a child inside. As summer temperatures rise, more kids are at risk. It's never OK to leave a child alone in a car, not even for a minute, and not even with the window cracked or the car running. When Facebook asks, ‘What’s on your mind?’ … this is what’s on mine today.

This morning, I read a heartbreaking news article out of Florida about the asphyxiation death of a one-month-old infant that led to the mother’s arrest. Reports state the mother admitted to sleeping with the infant despite prior education on safe sleep practices. Investigators noted that safe sleep options, including a bassinet and pack ’n play, were available in the home, and previous visits from child welfare services had included discussions about safe sleep guidelines.

Cases like this are devastating for everyone involved and serve as a painful reminder of how important safe sleep education and awareness truly are. One preventable tragedy is one too many.

Babies need to be:
•Alone, on a separate sleep service (not in your bed)
•Flat on their back
•In a safety approved crib, bassinet or pack ‘n play with a firm, flat mattress and a tight fitting sheet

Keep the crib completely free of soft objects, blankets, pillows, bumpers, and stuffed animals. Avoid couches, arm chairs, or sitting devices like swings or car seats for sleep. Place your babies crib in your bedroom.
