✨Graduate Spotlight - Candy Rose Cañete Anderson✨

Congratulations to Candy Rose Cañete Anderson, the Ulakaia Center's first scholarship recipient from the Philippines, on earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and also receiving an Academic Excellence Award!

The Ulakaia Center Scholarship played a significant role in her story by allowing her to pursue academic excellence without financial limitations defining her future. It eased a significant burden on her family and allowed her to focus on her studies, personal growth, and opportunities that helped shape her into the person she is today.

She participated in events, outreach activities, and runway showcases that supported meaningful causes, using her voice and platform to inspire, serve, and give back to the community. For this, she remains deeply grateful.

Candy plans to continue her education with a Master's degree in Psychology and intends to build a meaningful career in her field, and is dedicated to promoting mental health and supporting the holistic development of children and young people.

Meet our newest intern!

Maddie Morris joined our crew of 2026 interns this month and has hit the ground running! She recently graduated from Mountain City Christian Academy in Anchorage, where she had the opportunity to grow both academically and spiritually. Maddie is interning with Aleut in the administrative department, where she enjoys welcoming and assisting others, keeping things organized, and supporting the team in any way she can.

Maddie says, "I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn, serve, and gain valuable experience through this internship."

Welcome Esaias!

Meet Esaias Philemonof, one of two interns for Aleut Real Estate! Esaias was raised on St. George Island in the Pribilof's and now lives in Anchorage, where he recently graduated from West Anchorage High School. He is interning with Aleut Real Estate with the facilities department. In this internship, Esaias has the opportunity to assist with facility maintenance, support building improvement projects, and help with the overall upkeep of company properties.

Esaias shares, "I am grateful for the knowledge and experience I have gained, and I look forward to continuing to develop my skills as I pursue a future career in the electrical or welding trades."

Meet our 2026 Interns!

Introducing Madeline McCowan, one of our interns for the summer for Aleut! She is from Anchorage and has spent two years at Weslayan University and will be transferring to Chapman University in CA this fall to pursue a degree in film and media studies. Madeline is our Administrative intern at the Aleut headquarters in Anchorage, working at the front desk where she is often the first point of contact for visitors and callers. Her favorite part is creating a warm, welcoming environment for our shareholders.

Madeline says, "My time here at Aleut has been an incredibly fun, fulfilling, and informative experience. I’m excited to carry what I’ve learned into my studies this fall and into my future career."

Meet Dick Cumberlidge, one of our interns for the summer for Aleut!

Dick grew up in Sand Point before making the move to Cheney, WA. There, he is currently working towards a degree in Professional Accounting at Eastern Washington University. Through Dick's internship with Aleut, he is using his accounting knowledge to help our accounting department in the tax sector.

He states, "I feel a great sense of pride knowing that my work helps benefit our shareholders, our communities, and our families."

First up, meet Andrew (Drew) Peters, one of our interns for the summer at the Ulakaia Center!

Drew has been an immense help with creating a workforce development pathway to help his fellow shareholders and descendants receive training and employment at Aleut. He is currently working towards his MBA at UC Davis in CA, where he has also selflessly volunteered for over a decade to increase the visibility of Alaska Natives in Fort Ross, CA. Drew says that finally getting a chance to live up here feels like coming home. Welcome home, Drew!
