Stone Soup Group Supporting families who care for children with special needs in Alaska for over 30 years.

Stone Soup Group (SSG) is a statewide 501(c)3 non-profit that provides information, support, training and resources to assist families caring for children with special needs. SSG is staffed almost entirely by parents or family members of a child with special needs, so they know the journey and are better able to help other families navigate through what is often an overwhelming and confusing process following a diagnosis or, at times of transition later down the road. At SSG we understand that no single organization can do everything for one family; so we are here to provide that link to relevant community resources, ensuring that every child and family living with special needs receives quality coordinated care and support. Our services are available statewide and most programs and services are no cost to families.

Siblings need support, too!

Having a sibling with a disability can come with a lot of different feelings and experiences. Sometimes it’s nice to have a place where you can just be yourself, have fun, make friends, and spend time with other siblings who get it.

That’s what Sibshops is all about.

It’s a chance for siblings to connect, share, laugh, play, and know they’re not the only ones who understand what it’s like to grow up alongside a sibling with a disability. Because every sibling deserves a space where they feel seen, heard, and supported.

The Statewide Independent Living Council of Alaska is hosting a Fireside Chat with Somethings, a peer mentorship program, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm Alaska Time on Zoom.

Somethings is currently developing its peer mentorship program in Alaska. Once launched, youth ages 13 to 26 will be able to connect with trained Alaskan mentors for mental health support early, before challenges become a crisis. All mentorship will be clinically supervised.

Somethings is now in the hiring process for its Alaska peer mentors and is looking to hire Alaskans to support Alaskans. Young adults with lived experience can learn about employment opportunities as a peer mentor.

NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH | During October we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

In NDEAM we urge Alaskans to recognize and share the importance of individuals with disabilities in the workforce.

This yearly event began in 1945 as a weeklong national observance of the contributions of people with physical disabilities. In 1988, Congress designated the commemoration as NDEAM, which then evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions and other nonobvious disabilities. In 2001, the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) was created and entrusted to administer NDEAM, including the selection and promotion of its annual theme.

to Parent USA has a new toolkit on their website: Pathways to Possibilities: Families Leading the Way

The transition to adulthood is a significant milestone for every family. To support this journey, Families Leading the Way to Possibilities offers a comprehensive resource guide specifically designed for families of individuals with disabilities. Created through a multi-year collaboration by a national Parent Advisory Group, this toolkit was built by parents, for parents. It acknowledges that the path to independence is not linear; instead, it provides a flexible framework to support families exactly where they are in their journey. Take a moment to check this important tool out, there is some great information in there!
