Spraznikom! Joyous Feast of the Pokrov (Protection) of the Holy Mother of God!

His Grace, +Bishop Alexei extends his prayers and congratulations to parish in Akhiok whose name is dedicated to Mother of God’s protection along with the Sisterhood SaintInnocent. May God bless each of you abundantly and may the Mother of God always watch and protect you!

To Thee, O Holy Mother,
I dare to raise my voice,
Washing my face with tears:
Hear me in this sorrowful hour.

Please accept my warmest prayers,
Deliver my spirit from trials and evils,
Pour tenderness into my heart,
Guide me on the path to salvation.

Make me a stranger to my own will,
For I am ready to endure everything for God’s sake,
Be my shelter in my bitter lot,
Let me not die in sorrows.
Thou art the protection and refuge of the faithful;
I pray to Thee with all my soul:
Save me, my joy,
And have mercy on me!
(Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol)

May the Most Holy Mother of God extend over us all the Protecting Veil of Her Merciful Love. May it protect our hearts from sin and darkness, from indifference and self-love, from resentment and condemnation, from malice and hatred.
Let the hope for help from this inexhaustible love of the Mother of God give us all the desire to thank and glorify with all our hearts our Most Pure Intercessor.
Let our love cover the weaknesses of our neighbors and be a joy for them, for us and, of course, for our common Mother, who adopted all of humanity and with all her heart wishes for all of us salvation and a bright life in God. S’prazdnikom to all.

Tonight at 6pm Fr. Thomas will serve Vespers for the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos (Pokrov). Liturgy will begin tomorrow morning at 8am.

This is the patronal feast for our chapel as well as the Cathedral Sisterhood!

About Pokrov:

“On October 1, 911, during the reign of Emperor Leo the Wise, an all-night vigil was being held at the Blachernae Church of the Mother of God in Constantinople, with many of the faithful crowding the church. St Andrew the Fool for Christ (commemorated, October 2) was standing at the back of the church with his disciple Epiphanius. At around four in the morning, the most holy Theotokos appeared above the people, clothed in resplendent garments, surrounded by indescribable radiance, and holding a veil in her outstretched hands, as though to protect all the people. St Andrew said to Epiphanius ‘Do you see how the Queen and Lady of all is praying for the whole world?’ Epiphanius replied ‘Yes, Father, I see it and stand in dread.’ This wonderful event is recorded in Epiphanius’ life of St Andrew. Because of it, the Church keeps an annual feast on this date.”

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!

The monthly cleaning day is this Saturday at 10am!

As we prepare to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross, we will gather this Saturday at 10 AM to clean and prepare our church.

Everyone is invited to come and lend a hand as we prepare our temple for these beautiful and holy celebrations. Please don’t feel that you need to stay for the entire time, even if you can only spare an hour, your help is greatly appreciated!

There is always something that can be done, and when we work together, our small efforts become an offering of love to God and to our parish community.
