True Stories. Youth voices. Interested in becoming one of our volunteer story coaches? You can apply online at storyworksak.org. To learn more, send us a message!
As a volunteer story coach you will listen to a small group of 3-4 students each share a 5-minute, true, first person story. You --and the other students in the small group-- will then ask clarifying questions and offer feedback for each storyteller. Note: You do not need to be a storyteller to do this. You only need to love listening to stories. Want to be involved but find yourself thinking: "H
ow on earth would I know what to do?" The wonderful staff at the Alaska Teen Media Institute lead an hour long training for volunteers. Volunteer Qualifications:
Qualified volunteers will demonstrate an ability to listen thoughtfully and respond appropriately to student stories, will be prepared to follow all of the Anchorage School District Adult Student Boundary Protocols, and will allow Story Works Alaska to conduct a background check. Interested new volunteers' will be cleared to work with students pending background check and demonstration of qualifications at Story Works orientation/training.

Thank you to all of the awesome TRIO students at Bartlett High School that participated in our first in-person lunch time story circle! We had such a great time listening to your stories, sharing, and connecting with one another.
-Story Circles are opportunities for small groups of people to gather together to listen and share thoughts and stories related to a common theme. The purpose is to simply listen and connect.
-If this is something that you're interested in participating, or want to learn more about please feel free to reach out, or stop by the Story Works office. The Story Works office lives in room 432b at Bartlett High School. ❤️

Story Works offers a free, Common Core-aligned, high school English/Language Arts curriculum that invites youth to share aloud true, first-person stories. Videos, recorded example stories, tips from past participants, and easily adaptable handouts support safe, productive, and meaningful workshops. As stories are heard, explored, and shared aloud, youth build meaning, find connection, and know they matter.
At the core of each workshop is a simple invitation to share a 4-5 minute story aloud, in class, without notes. While working on their stories, participants are allowed to opt out of speaking at any time and can choose write a personal narrative or analytical essay instead.
Story Works supports English/Language Arts standards but also remains mindful that public schooling has at times played a negative role in the forced assimilation of young people. With this in mind, we encourage all students to use the storytelling approach that works best for them as an individual --whether or not their particular style, strategy, or voice has previously been modeled in English class.
Over 1,800 high school students in Anchorage and Unalakleeet have now shared their own stories with their classes. In addition to "connecting," "learning new things about people I have known since kindergarten," "becoming closer as a class," and "removing the masks we all wear," more than 97% of sampled participants have also self-reported outcomes aligned with CDC-recognized protective factors against youth risk behavior.
