Gracious God,

As summer begins to loosen its hold on Alaska, we are reminded that change is all around us.

Our children are returning to school. Families are settling into new routines. The State Fair is once again bringing Alaskans together. Geese are beginning to gather overhead, preparing for their long journey south. The days are getting shorter, the air a little cooler, and autumn is waiting just around the corner.

In this season of change, help us to slow down and notice one another.

Watch over our children, teachers, and school staff as a new school year begins. Protect those traveling our roads, working long hours, and serving our communities. Give strength to our police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, first responders, and all those who quietly care for others.

For those beginning something new, give courage.

For those facing an ending, give peace.

For those carrying burdens no one else can see, remind them that they are not alone.

And as the seasons change around us, help us remember the things that should remain constant: kindness, compassion, patience, gratitude, and our willingness to care for our neighbors.

Bless our communities, our families, and all who call this beautiful place home.

Watch over Alaska in the season ahead.

Sometimes ministry doesn't happen in a church.

Sometimes it happens in the quiet moments.

Like these swans on an Anchorage pond, we are reminded that care often looks calm, patient, and unseen. Chaplains have the privilege of walking beside first responders, their families, and our communities through life's hardest moments, offering a listening ear, compassionate presence, and hope when it's needed most.

Thank you to every police officer, firefighter, dispatcher, EMT, and public safety professional who serves Alaska every day. We are honored to serve those who serve.

Are you interested in learning more about your Anchorage Police Department? Applications to attend the next Citizens Academy are currently being accepted.

The program is designed to promote and enhance citizen understanding and awareness of the Anchorage Police Department's role within our community. The objective of the course is not to prepare graduates to become police officers, but to instill a greater general knowledge of APD's many functions.

APD’s Citizen Academy 26-2 will be held at APD’s Headquarters every Wednesday from August 19, 2026 - November 11, 2026, from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. Registration applications are processed in the order in which they are received; once the class is full, registration will be closed.

Dear God,

Today we lift up those whose hearts are burdened by the loss of someone they love.

Draw near to those who are grieving, whether their loss is recent or carried quietly through the years. Surround them with Your peace and comforting presence when the weight of sorrow feels overwhelming.

Bring comfort to families, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and all whose lives have been forever changed by loss. Grant them strength for each new day, courage for the difficult moments, and hope that healing will come in time.

Remind them that love leaves a lasting legacy. May cherished memories bring comfort, the kindness of others bring encouragement, and Your presence remind them they are never alone.

Guide those who walk beside the grieving. Help us to listen with compassion, speak with gentleness, and remember that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer is simply our presence.

We also pray for the first responders, chaplains, healthcare professionals, counselors, and all who walk with others through tragedy and loss. Give them wisdom, compassion, and strength as they serve.

May every grieving heart find comfort, every burden become a little lighter, and every person who mourns know they are loved and held in Your care.

For every life remembered, we give thanks.

Amen.

We are so grateful for our Responders.

Running on Fumes

Over 50,000 hours of overtime and it’s only July!

are currently running the MOST calls in our history without any additional responding firefighters or fire stations added within the last decade.

Your firefighters are passionate about serving you, the citizens of Anchorage. But at what cost?  Without filling voluntary overtime, that means station closures, rig closures, slower response times, mandatory overtime, and increased risk.

The Anchorage Fire Department is severely understaffed and your firefighters pick up that extra work load daily.  The massive call volume is shared with just a fraction of the firefighters that should be serving Anchorage.

Your firefighters currently work 2912 hours per year (without overtime) compared to 2080 hours a 40 hour job works. Add those overtime hours and some of your firefighters are working the equivalent of two full time jobs!

We often hear: “All of that overtime money must be so nice!”

Sure. That’s partially true. It can be nice to help fund a retirement account because there is no pension available for your firefighters.

But is it worth the missed birthdays and holidays, increased risk of injury, expedited burnout and mental health strain?

Your firefighters are working doubles (sometimes mandatory), absorbing extra shifts, and answering every 911 call while running on fumes.  Your firefighters are holding the line in impossible conditions and still showing up.
