Some of you may remember Minnie Moon.

We met Minnie in November 2025 during our Nome Clinic. What began as a routine spay quickly became a medical emergency.

Minnie needed care that simply wasn't available locally.

So we moved mountains.

✈️ Craig Walters and Resolve Aviation helped medevac Minnie by private plane to Anchorage.
🩺 BluePearl Cares veterinarians and technicians provided emergency care during her flight.
🏥 Minnie Moon spent the night at Pet Emergency before being transported back to our plane and returned to our veterinary team waiting in Nome—and eventually home to her family.

We thought we had helped Minnie through the hardest part of her story.

This summer, a surrender to rescue was being planned by Paws of Nome and their rescue partners, with Minnie scheduled to return to Nome and begin the next chapter of her life.

A kennel was sent. Her transportation was being arranged. People were ready to welcome her.

But Minnie never made it to Nome.

On August 5, 2026, Minnie was shot and killed in her home village.

After everything she had survived—and after so many people had worked to give her another chance—we are heartbroken that she never made it. 💔

But Minnie’s story cannot simply end with sadness.

It reminds us why Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach (ARVO) exists.

Rural Alaska’s animals face enormous barriers to veterinary care—distance, weather, transportation, cost, limited services, and the lack of nearby emergency care.

ARVO works to help bridge those gaps.

❤️ Your donation helps ARVO keep showing up.

Your support helps provide veterinary exams, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, medications, medical care, supplies, and outreach to communities where access to veterinary care can be incredibly difficult.

We cannot change what happened to Minnie.

But we can choose what happens next.

We can build better resources. We can support rural families. We can educate. We can advocate. And we can keep showing up for the next animal who needs us.

A heartfelt thank you to BluePearl Cares, Craig Walters and Resolve Aviation, Paws of Nome and their partners, our incredible ARVO volunteers, and everyone who has supported this mission. ❤️

🐾 Please consider making a donation to Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach in Minnie’s memory.

Every dollar helps us reach another animal, another family, another community.

For Minnie Moon.
For rural Alaska.
For the animals who still need us. ❤️

We are so appreciative of the hospitality from the community of Kokhanok!

We are particularly grateful for Stephanie Nowatak's guided hike, and the sled dog tour provided by Marina McGourty and Colter Barnes (East Wind Mushing-https://www.eastwindmushing.com/).

Our team is all volunteers who take time away from their home, families (2 and 4-legged), and jobs to provide essential services to the pets and their owners in remote communities. A little R&R at the end of the clinic day is well deserved and replenishes us for whatever comes next.

We are happy to report on a successful clinic in Kokhanok, Alaska!

Our volunteer veterinary team completed 5 neuter and 3 dog spays, along with providing vaccines, deworming, and other wellness services for community dogs and 1 cat.

We'd like to thank BluePearl Cares, Petco Love, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and other generous donors and supporters.

We are grateful for the community’s support including the Kokhanok Village Council, Stephanie Nowatak, Marina McGourty, and Colter Barnes, and for pet owners entrusting their animals to our care. It is a privilege and an honor to serve these rural communities!

Thank you to Karen and Craig with Resolve Aviation for safely transporting our team to Kokhanok and back.
