Alaska Native Justice Center The Alaska Native Justice Center is dedicated to helping Native people navigate the justice system.

ANJC was established to address Alaska Natives' unmet needs regarding the Alaska civil and criminal justice system in response to the increasing disproportionate rates of victimization, incarceration and other justice-related issues impacting Alaska Natives throughout Alaska. We provide services to all ethnicities and integrate Alaska Native culture-based advocacy programs and intervention initiatives necessary to assist in the resolution of legal circumstances such as divorce, child custody, domestic violence/sexual assault, human trafficking, victims of crime, youth development and youth and adult prisoner reentry.

In this webinar, ANJC will review the process by which Alaska Native Tribes can intervene (become a party) in a state Child in Need of Aid (CINA) case. We will review the forms that a Tribe must file with the Alaska State Court and talk about why ANJC recommends that Tribes intervene in all CINA cases involving their tribal children.

This webinar is for tribal leaders, ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) workers, and tribal court judges and support staff. Others are welcome to attend.

The US Department of Justice, Office of Tribal Justice (OTJ) has scheduled a series of tribal consultations in September to solicit feedback from tribal leaders and Tribes’ authorized designees regarding the results of the Alaska Pilot Program. The Pilot Program allows Alaska Tribes to take steps toward implementing Special Tribal Criminal Jurisdiction (STCJ) under the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022.

OTJ intends to use the views and opinions shared by tribal leaders and authorized designees at these consultations to support the potential implementation of STCJ by Alaska Tribes as well as to develop a report to Congress on the current status of the Alaska Pilot Program. The consultation schedule can be found in OTJ’s “Dear Tribal Leader” letter, and the accompanying framing paper contains a list of discussion questions for prompting input.

Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC) and the Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center (AKNWRC) are hosting a virtual tribal roundtable on August 28 from 12:00-1:00 pm to:

Help tribal leaders and authorized designees develop consultation comments,

obtain clarification on the scope of the discussion questions, and

find common ground with one another regarding the strengths and challenges of the Alaska Pilot Program.

This roundtable will be a space for open dialogue related to each of the framing paper questions. ANJC and AKNWRC attorneys will be available to answer related questions
