What’s HOCC been up to? Glad you asked! While we have no set list of priority topics, a few have organically arisen, resulting in three recent resolutions.
1) Housing - Anchorage, like many communities nationwide, is dealing with vastly lower than needed supplies of housing. We passed a resolution in favor of one measure currently before the Assembly (AO 2026-85 / MMHOP). While this would not directly affect the HOCC area, our graduating young folks and downsizing seniors deserve to be able to continue calling Anchorage home.
2) Non-Motorized Transportation Safety - There is rising interest in making sure people walking, rolling, and biking around our community can do it safely, particularly where there are missing pieces of infrastructure connecting neighborhoods to schools. We passed a resolution in favor of a trail upgrade project connecting Bowman Elementary to the surrounding neighborhood and will be looking at similar projects in our upcoming CAPSIS requests.
3) Education funding. After multiple meetings where we have had in-depth discussions on the topic in general, we passed a targeted resolution asking Anchorage School District to use $17 million provided by the State to hire teachers instead of placing it into savings for next school year.
Our next meeting is 15 October at 7pm online and in-person at the South High School Library. We are going to talk about our CAPSIS list. It will also be the last meeting before the election so we hope candidates for office will come provide us their plans to address these priority topics.
