Don't miss "Finding and Working with a Literary Agent" on Saturday, June 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. Anjanette Barr will lead this Alaska Writers Guild session!

Not only are literary agents an essential partner in the traditional publishing community, they are super-fans, career coaches, and mentors. Anjanette Barr will explain why agents are necessary, what they actually DO for authors, and how to find the right agent for your project. She'll definitely attempt to convince you that literary agents are much more than just annoying gatekeepers, but her primary goal will be to give you all the information that you need to decide for yourself whether a literary agent is the advocate you need, and how to find one.

Here are the deets for another April program from Alaska Writers Guild—Ins and Outs of Audiobook Production

At the end of this presentation, authors will understand:
🎧 how to control the costs of an audiobook
🎧 how narrators and authors are paid,
🎧 how and where to find talented narrators
🎧 how to attract the best talent to their projects
🎧 how to appear most attractive as an author to potential narrators
🎧 how to vet narrators beyond the audition sample
🎧 the Pros and Cons of AI narration

Scott Ellis is a two-time Audiobook of the Year award-winning narrator with over 125 audiobooks under his belt—and somehow, he still has a voice left. He holds degrees in Theatre and Education, which means he can both perform Shakespeare and explain it with a whiteboard and dry-erase markers. His company, Ellis Audiobooks, has produced over 300 books. Hey, he can’t be the right voice for every project!

Scott spent nearly 30 years teaching middle school literature (yes, on purpose) and a few more years as an elementary school librarian—perfect training for character voices, managing chaos, and surviving on caffeine and patience.

All of that classroom time sharpened his storytelling skills and gave him a sixth sense for pacing, emotion, and when to throw in just the right dramatic pause.

When he’s not behind the mic, Scott can be found golfing, fishing, kayaking, camping, or biking—basically anything outdoors that doesn’t involve grading papers. He lives in Massachusetts but escapes to Sanibel Island, Florida, as often as possible, where the only thing better than the weather is the excuse to narrate in flip-flops.

Join us from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 18, via Zoom. Registration is $15 for members, $25 for nonmembers. Visit alaskawritersguild.com/event-6622475. We hope to see you there!

Check out one of our April programs, “Submitting Your Manuscript … and More” with Ken Post.

If you’ve written a short story, poem, or nonfiction piece and are wondering how to get it published, this workshop will get you pointed in the right direction. It covers finding critical readers, the submission process, cover letters, submission guidelines, submitting strategies, handling rejection, and more.

Originally from the suburbs of New Jersey, Ken retired from the Forest Service after working in Alaska for 40 years studying brown bears, building trails, as well as managing a large mine and several wilderness areas. His short fiction has appeared in two dozen literary magazines and his collection, “Greyhound Cowboy and Other Stories,” was published by Cornerstone Press in 2024. He resides in Juneau in a beach home looking across a glacial fjord—a constant inspiration for his writing.

Join us for free on Sunday, April 12, at 10 a.m. via Zoom at  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84955210347?pwd=ifmUDqLmRJaaDchX8Cw5gpb78X5zmW.1
