ISU AMS This is the official public page for the Iowa State University Student Chapter of the American Meteo We meet monthly in Agronomy Hall.

We are a group of undergraduate meteorology majors and weather enthusiasts. The chapter is open to any undergraduate student currently enrolled at Iowa State University. We do a huge amount of community outreach and social events, as well as weather related presentations and workshops for students. For our final cabinet member spotlight is our Cy’s Eyes Representative, Evan McWhirt! Cy’s Eyes on the Skies is a student led broadcast meteorology club here at Iowa State. Evan is a junior in meteorology from Schertz, TX. His favorite band is the Bear Naked Ladies and his favorite sport is curling. His favorite movie is Pokémon Ranger & The Temple of the Sea.
Evan’s favorite class so far at Iowa State has been MTEOR 2270. He has an interest in numerical data models. Evan’s favorite weather phenomena are clouds. Evan’s favorite part of AMS is community outreach. Outside of AMS and Cy’s Eyes, Evan is involved with intramural curling and volleyball and is a Pokémon TCG Judge.
One last fun fact about Evan is that he is a private pilot and flies small planes for fun in his spare time!

Our Forecast Chair for the 2025-26 academic year has been Sophie Miller! The role of the forecast chair is to organize events that encourage chapter members to improve their forecasting abilities and manage involvement in contests such as WxChallenge. Sophie is a senior in meteorology at Iowa State University. She is from Cincinnati, OH. Her favorite musical artist is Mother Mother, favorite movie is Wall-E, and favorite sport is tennis.
Sophie is interested in mesoscale dynamics with a focus on supercells and mesoscale convective systems. Her favorite classes in her time here at Iowa State have been Radar Meteorology and Dynamic Meteorology II. Her favorite part of AMS is being able to attend social events and the annual AMS conference.
One last fun fact about our forecast chair is that she once led a storm chasing caravan that found a six inch hailstone that they stored in a cooler and later cut open for research purposes!

This evening marks our final monthly meeting of the semester! Because we met our Fund ISU goal we will be having ice cream at our meeting tonight! After the meeting we will wrap up elections for our 2026-27 cabinet. We hope to see you all in Agronomy 2050 at 7 PM!

Our current NWA Representative is Riley Mildebrandt! Riley acts as a student representative for the Central Iowa Chapter of the National Weather Association to encourage involvement of meteorology students in both local chapters. Riley is a sophomore studying meteorology at Iowa State University and hails from Maple Grove, MN. Riley’s favorite musician is Bruce Springsteen and his favorite movie is Elf. His favorite sport is either Nordic skiing, roller skating, or running.
So far, Riley’s favorite class has been MTEOR 2270 and he is interested in operational meteorology. His favorite weather phenomena are tornadoes. Riley’s favorite part of AMS are the people you are able to meet and opportunities that are provided through events and networking! Outside of AMS, Riley is also involved in the Central Iowa Chapter of the NWA.
One last fun fact about Riley is that you shouldn’t be surprised to see him running or skiing with a short-sleeved shirt on in 10-15 degree weather!

Our current AMS @ ISU Past President is none other than David Hultman! The Past President position is held by the previous year’s chapter president. They provide continued advice and support to current chapter members even though they may have left campus. David graduated last spring and currently works at KGAN in Cedar Rapids, IA! His hometown is Watkins, IA. David’s favorite musician is Tyler the Creator, his favorite movie is In the Tall Grass, and his favorite sport is soccer.
David is interested in operational meteorology, aviation, and instrumentation. During his time at Iowa State, his favorite class was MTEOR 3110. David’s favorite weather phenomena are derechos. David’s favorite part of AMS is seeing all the areas of research presented at the National AMS Conference. He is also involved in the Central Iowa Chapter of the National Weather Association.
One last fun fact about our Past President is that he can pop his jaw on command!

We have a big night ahead of us with our March monthly meeting! Since we reached our FundISU campaign goals, our cabinet members will be partaking in a sour candy trivia challenge with a couple of special guests! At the end of the meeting we will have our first round of elections for our 2026-2027 cabinet, followed by our annual Twister movie night! We hope to see you all there!

Our AMS @ ISU Sophomore Chair is Anna Konrad! The role of the sophomore chair is to manage events that help acclimate new students to the program and work with the academic chair to help them get a head start on their careers. Anna is a sophomore studying meteorology here at Iowa State University. She hails from Westboro, WI. Her favorite musicians are Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. Her favorite movies are Footloose and Mama Mia. Her favorite sports are volleyball and dancing.
Anna is interested in broadcast meteorology and the National Weather Service. Her favorite weather phenomena are hurricanes and winter weather. Her favorite class so far has been MTEOR 2060, but she has been looking forward to MTEOR 3010. Anna’s favorite thing about AMS is all of the events that are held and how those events help form connections and friendships! She is also involved in Orchesis and SALT Company.
One last fun fact about Anna is that before she graduated high school she had visited 42 of the 50 states and plans on visiting all 50 before she is 30!

Our 2025-26 AMS @ ISU Historian is Adler Hanson! The role of the historian is to design our chapter poster for the annual National AMS Conference, manage our social media accounts, and run the monthly photo and video contest. Adler is a junior from West Union, IA studying meteorology here at Iowa State University. His favorite band is VOLITION, favorite movie is Twister, and favorite sport is NASCAR.
Adler is interested in mesoscale meteorology and severe hazards. His favorite weather phenomena are tornadoes. Adler’s favorite part of AMS is being able to form connections in the meteorological community on campus and across the country!
One last fun fact about Adler is that in 2024 he saw a tornado and total solar eclipse within 24 hours of each other!

Last semester, we added a second Outreach Committee position and elected Zach Novy to fill it! Zach is a junior studying meteorology here at Iowa State University. He is from O’Fallon, IL. His favorite musician is Bruno Mars, his favorite movies are The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and his favorite sport is football.
Zach is interested in operational meteorology and his favorite class has been MTEOR 3010. His favorite weather phenomena are blizzards. Zach’s favorite thing about AMS are the social events and outreach! Zach is also involved in intramural sports and Cy’s Eyes on the skies.
One last fun fact about Zach is that he is the youngest of four brothers!
