Criticized as man-hating, Barbie is a masterful investigation into girlhood and femininity that patriarchal influences have sought to erase.

Quick poll:
Thinking about chairing a revival in DSM of the Slutwalk for this fall; any opposition to the concept or does anyone want to help make it happen? I do not want this movement to separate fellow feminists, and social justice advocates, so I'm looking to my community first; here are past articles on it with differing views:

Iowa Denim Day

On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 IowaCASA is asking businesses, nonprofits and groups to allow employees to wear jeans in exchange for donating $5.
Denim Day is an annual awareness event that began in 1998 after a teenage girl was s*xually assaulted by her driving instructor in Italy. The Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome overturned the original guilty verdict claiming the victim was wearing tight jeans and she must have had to remove them, thereby giving consent to have s*x.

In protest, the women of the Italian legislature wore jeans to advocate for the misconceptions surrounding s*xual assault and violence. Today, jeans continue to be the symbol to promote awareness against s*xual violence in this global movement.

Join the movement and show your support for survivors of s*xual violence and IowaCASA by participating in Iowa Denim Day.

Internship Opportunity:

Iowa Office on the Status of Women
Department of Human Rights, State of Iowa
Lucas State Office Building, Des Moines

Overview:
The Iowa Office on the Status of Women (ICSW), a state agency within the Iowa Department of Human Rights, champions the success and wellbeing of women and girls in Iowa through responsive advocacy. The agency vision is to grow Iowa’s opportunities so that every woman and girl can reach her full potential.
The ICSW is supported by a small staff and has always looked for the type of quality work that dedicated interns can provide. Likewise, interns have benefited from the learning experiences offered at the ICSW. In the past, interns have been undergraduate and graduate students with a broad range of study areas, including education, history, social work, law, public administration, and communication.
The ICSW shares staff with the Iowa Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs (API), and though the intern’s work primarily will be focused on ICSW initiatives, there may be opportunities to work on projects for API as needed.
Internships are unpaid, and students are responsible for their own housing and transportation needs. Hours are flexible, and efforts will be made to accommodate student schedules.

Focus Areas:
The ICSW is currently interested in using intern skills in the following areas:
1) Research and data collection about gender-balance on Iowa boards and commissions.
2) Research about women-owned businesses in Iowa.
3) Assistance in planning the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
4) Assistance in web updates and web design.

For more information, contact the Office on the Status of Women at 515-281-4470;
[email protected]; or Lucas State Office Building, Des Moines, IA 50319.

A Call to Action!!!
In the next week and a half we need to get the House subcommittee to meet and the full Public Safety committee to vote on the dating violence bill SF 359. We could really use your help and voices on this. Here is what we need:

1) We would like students to contact the subcommittee members and urge them to meet and move this bill forward.
Steven Olson of Clinton County
Joel Fry of Clarke County
Rick Olson of Polk County

2) We would like to contact the leadership of the Public Safety committee and urge them to push the subcommittee to meet and to bring the bill up in committee.
Clel Baudler, Chair
Tom Shaw, Vice Chair
Bob M. Kressig, Ranking Member

For all of these you can call the House switchboard: 515-281-3221 or look up their email addresses at:
https://www.legis.iowa.gov/Legislators/find.aspx

Here is a script to use for your asking of their support:

Victims in dating relationships are currently denied the protection of criminal domestic abuse law, which disproportionately impacts our youngest Iowans. I urge you to improve the law, to protect all Iowans impacted by domestic violence – a victim of dating violence should not have to marry his or her abuser to get adequate protection under the law. A regular assault charge does not sufficiently address the needs of domestic violence victims. Unlike a bar fight or one-time attack, victims of domestic violence face a continued cycle of abuse and control that is difficult to escape. The remedies in a criminal domestic abuse assault address the cycle of violence by requiring batterers’ education classes, automatic arrest provisions, an automatic “no-contact” order, and heightened penalties for repeat offenders. Importantly, early intervention will also act as a preventative measure before marriage and children are involved, creating a greater social and economic impact on our communities and families.

Thank you students for helping support and push this MUCH needed bill to be passed!!!!!
