Teresa Barnes will be speaking about CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate). She serves as the local CASA Program Coordinator and oversees CASA services across nine counties. She recruits and trains dedicated community members to serve as advocates – volunteers appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of children involved in the juvenile court system. She supports these volunteers as they work to ensure each child’s voice is heard and their needs are clearly presented to the court.

At one of our recent meetings, we heard from Dawne Garvey, Corporate Donor Relations Manager for Food Bank of Iowa, about the reality of food insecurity and hunger, especially as it relates to Story County and Iowa.

Food Bank of Iowa supports over 700 pantries and programs with 2.7 million pounds of food distributed each month. They make sure to offer healthy food options, not chips, cookies and soda. Dawne explained they often need to use cash donations to purchase items to make a complete meal with donated items. Pasta needs sauce, cereal needs milk, etc. The recent USDA efficiency action cut donations from 27% of their supply to 5%. They are able to “rescue about 30% of their food supply from unlabeled cans, misprinted boxes or otherwise good food that cannot be sold. They
partner with other large food banks to swap food items in need or abundance.

Story County has one of the largest service areas in Iowa with 33 pantries and meal programs. Food and medical costs have risen 30-40% since 2022, creating a pinch in the pocketbook. The poverty rate in Story County is 17%.

Our guests tomorrow are Anne Kinzel and Carolyn Klaus. They will share the Iowa Citizens Handbook created by the local League of Women Voters and promoted across the state. They will discuss the importance of civic involvement!

BLAST BACK TO SCHOOL!!
Thank you Maeann Unser for coordinating another successful shopping adventure. Cynthia Gaunt, Kris Meinhard, Deb Russell, Jim
Miller and Geri Derner filled 4 carts with 473 school supplies
totaling $499.76. All items and $500 cash will be donated to
the Blast Back to School program which provides backpacks of
grade specific supplies for 1800 students in Story County.

We will be at the Ames Farmers Market TOMORROW as we are partnering with The Ames Foundation. Come find us and paint a tile that will be part of this Unity Tree!

Whether you're an experienced artist or just want to have fun with family and friends, everyone is welcome to leave their creative mark on this special project. Each tile will become part of a permanent mural celebrating our community.

As part of the experience, participants will have the opportunity to share their information so they can be recognized as one of the artists who helped create the mural.

CYCLONE COUNTRY AKTION CLUB hosted the annual Cy-Hawk game and picnic with the Aktion Club from Iowa City recently.

Aktion Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at First United Methodist Church – 3:30 snacks and 4:00 meeting and
program.

Their next meeting is July 7 with Keith Abraham from Ames Parks and Rec.
