Distant Hill Nature Trail

Distant Hill Nature Trail Distant Hill Nature Trail includes two miles of wheelchair and stroller accessible trails and and an additional two miles of hiking trails.

We also have a 10-stop half-mile long Geology Trail along with a half-mile Story Walk® with a new book each month. Distant Hill Nature Trail is a network of gently sloping compacted gravel trails in Alstead and Walpole, NH. sy access to a number of unique wetland habitats including:

Five Vernal pools
A Black Ash Forest Seep
A floating Cranberry Bog/Fen with boardwalk

There is a fairy-house village and a play area for children, along with a Story Walk® for young children with a new book installed every month by the Walpole Town Library. There are more than a dozen large sitting-stones found along the trails for rest and contemplation. There is also a half-mile long Geology Trail that connects to the Nature Trail. Distant Hill Nature and Geology Trail are part of Distant Hill Gardens, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental and horticultural learning center abutting the Nature and Geology Trails.

Distant Hill Nature Trail’s Story

Distant Hill Nature Trail is a mile-long network of gently sloping compacted gravel trails on 21 acres in south-western Alstead, NH. The five-foot wide trails wind through a hemlock/hardwood forest rich with many species of native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees and give easy access to a number of unique wetland habitats including: five vernal pools, a black ash forest seep, and a floating cranberry bog/fen. You will also find White Rock Woods, a nature play area, near the start of the trail.

Distant Hill Nature Trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible, with many sitting stones along the trail for rest and contemplation.

Abutting Distant Hill Nature Trail is Distant Hill Gardens, an environmental and horticultural learning center with an additional 37 acres to explore.

Distant Hill NatureTrail is free and open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Trailhead parking is available, along with an information kiosk.
