Open from 10am to 4pm on the third weekend in May, and the first and third weekends of June through October. Distant Hill Gardens & Nature Trail encompass 155-acres of forest, fields, and wetlands straddling the town-line separating Walpole and Alstead, NH. You will find us five miles east of downtown Walpole. We are an environmental and horticultural learning center dedicated to inspiring and emp

owering children and adults to cultivate an intimate connection to the natural world through education and observation. We hope visitors will leave with a better understanding of the vital connection between plants, animals, and humans, and how we can use Earth's resources in a way that strengthens and sustains those connections. Distant Hill Gardens is open to the public on select weekends from May to October, and for numerous educational workshops and talks throughout the year. We also offer guided tours for groups of any size by appointment, and self-guided tours by appointment or chance. Distant Hill Nature Trail is a mile-long wheelchair accessible gravel trail just east of the gardens. It is open daily dawn-to-dusk, free of charge. Trailhead parking is available, along with an information kiosk.

We won a $2,000 NH Gives prize by just ONE VOTE.

That means every single donation mattered.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, Distant Hill received 164 donations—placing us third in number of donors among all the small nonprofits participating in NH Gives—and earning $3,500 in prizes and matching funds. We secured the Power of Many Prize by a single vote, bringing in $2,000, and unlocked an anonymous donor challenge grant worth $1,500.

Together, you helped raise critical support for:
🌿 Expanding our Trail Accessibility Program
🌿 Improving access to nature for people with mobility disabilities and limitations
🌿 Stewarding and protecting natural resources
🌿 Creating opportunities for outdoor exploration, learning, and connection
🌿 Building a more inclusive outdoor community

More than a fundraising success, this was a powerful demonstration of what a community can accomplish when it comes together around a shared vision.

🙏THANK YOU! to everyone who donated to our nonprofit, Friends of Distant Hill, during NH Gives! Because of you, we won the $2,000 third-place “Power of Many” prize for the number of donors to a small nonprofit. Every single donation mattered—we beat the fourth-place organization by just one donor!

🎉 Congratulations to the winners of the Power of Community Prizes for Small Organizations, sponsored by New Hampshire Charitable Foundation!

This special prize celebrates the impact of small but mighty nonprofits with operating budgets under $150,000.

🏆 First Prize – $5,000: Friends of Friends of Mascoma Foundation
🥈 Second Prize – $3,000: Windham Endowment
🥉 Third Prize – $2,000: Friends of Distant Hill Nature Trail

These awards go to the organizations in this budget category that received the highest number of unique online donors between 5 PM on June 9 and 5 PM on June 10.
