This is one of the most common questions we receive! While Habitat for Humanity helps families achieve affordable homeownership, we do not give homes away.

Families who partner with Habitat for Humanity go through an application process and work alongside volunteers as part of their homeownership journey. They also complete homebuyer and financial education programs and purchase their homes with an affordable mortgage.

Habitat's goal is to make homeownership attainable for families who may not otherwise have access to traditional housing opportunities. Through partnership, education, and affordable financing, families gain the strength, stability, and self-reliance that come with owning a home.

In short, Habitat helps families build and buy homes, not receive them for free.
