Here is your reminder: Please check the DNR Burn Permit Status Page to know if it is a burn day in Northern Michigan.

We believe you really do not want the fines and restitution that can be associated with illegal burns.

The 10th Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk Returns to Where It All Began on September 12th, 2026! 🏃‍♂️🇺🇸

We’re excited to announce that the 10th Annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk will be returning to Bay View Park in downtown Alpena, the very place where it all started back in 2016!

As we bring this milestone event back to its roots, we also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Alpena CRTC for being such outstanding hosts over the past two years. Their generosity allowing us to use the base and their support helped make the 2024 and 2025 event a huge success, and we are truly grateful. We look forward to working together again in the future!

We look forward to gathering once again at Bay View Park to honor, remember, and run together for our first responders and service members!

International Firefighters’ Day isn’t about celebration.

It’s about recognition.

Because the reality is—
this job is hard, unpredictable, and often unseen.

In Alpena Township, our firefighters answer the call—day or night—
no matter what’s waiting on the other side.

They train.
They respond.
They carry responsibility most people never have to think about.

This community is safer because they show up with boots on the ground.

Today, we acknowledge that.

Thank you to every firefighter serving Alpena Township.

Make sure you always check the MI burn permit status if you plan to make a controlled burn. We are heading into wildfire season and we have a large amount of extra fuel on the ground from the most recent ice storm.

Elevated fire danger will be seen across northeast lower Michigan Monday due to the combination of stronger winds and dry conditions. For the latest open burning information, please visit: www2.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits/.

Our thoughts are with the small business owners affected by tonight’s fire and the first responders who are working to keep everyone safe.
Thank you to every firefighter, medic, and responder for your courage and commitment. Alpena Township tax payer stands with you — tonight and always.
