AmeriCorps Seniors is a network of national service programs for Americans 55 years and older. Senior Companions are volunteers who provide assistance and friendship to seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills. The program aims to keep seniors independent longer, and provide respite to family caregivers. Foster Grandparents are role models, mentors, and

friends to children with exceptional needs. The program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active by serving children and youth in their communities. Volunteers receive pre-service orientation, training from the organization where they serve, supplemental insurance while on duty, mileage reimbursement and earn a tax-free hourly stipend.

NEMCSA AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers from throughout northeastern Michigan gathered at Alpena's Besser Museum for the programs annual Thanksgiving luncheon in-service. The museum was decked out for the annual holiday "The Festival of Lights". Volunteers enjoyed a educational holiday-themed planetarium show, including a virtual roller coaster ride!

We are truly grateful for our AmeriCorps Seniors! Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

Gratiot County Foster Grandma Julia works closely with 3 students who only speak Spanish. She translates to 2 kindergarten students, and one second grader. She said one of the students she works with was leaving and in Spanish told her “Goodbye and God Bless you”. It didn't take long for Grandma Julia to build a bond with this student!
Second grade teacher Mrs. Vance told FGP staff how valuable Grandma Julia is to their school, and how much the translating has helped the students and teachers.

NEMSCA Volunteer Programs recently honored the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Program volunteers with a drive-thru recognition. The volunteers were celebrated for their past year of service with a to-go lunch and a gift of thanks. Every year, our volunteers look forward to receiving a "years of service" pin, that indicates the number of years they have served their community in the FGP or SCP program. This year, one of our Foster Grandparent Volunteers celebrated 19 years of serving in a local school!
Thank you all for your commitment to service!
