πŸŽƒπŸŽ FALL FUN, FRESH AIR, AND GOOD COMPANY
Our Monroe clients enjoyed a beautiful October outing this week – picking apples and pumpkins, and spending time together.

Activities like these are about more than the destinations. They provide opportunities for our clients to connect with others, enjoy new experiences, and remain engaged in their communities.

At Sights for Hope, supporting independence and quality of life also means creating opportunities to get out, spend time together, and enjoy everything the season has to offer.

🌟 SHARING MOMENTS. BUILDING CONFIDENCE.
Opportunities to share joys and accomplishments with people who have similar life experiences can strengthen self-confidence, especially for young people.

🎳 Before heading out for a bowling outing this week, clients from our Camp I CAN! and Transitions programs took time to share what has been happening in their lives. One client performed a dance she created, while another, Averi, talked about training with her new guide dog, Julia. πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί

These moments of connection and encouragement help young people recognize their capabilities, support one another, and build confidence to take on new experiences.

πŸ₯Š WHEN A PRESIDENT FACED VISION LOSS
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was an avid sportsman who believed in vigorous physical activity.

What many of us weren't taught in history class is that Roosevelt served much of his presidency with significant vision loss in his left eye. He suffered the injury while boxing with a military aide at the White House.

Historical accounts differ on whether the match occurred in 1904 or 1905, and on the extent of his eventual vision loss. What is clear is that Roosevelt experienced a significant change in his eyesight, adapted to that change, and continued carrying out the responsibilities of the presidency.

Roosevelt's experience reminds us that adapting to vision loss is not about returning to the way things were. It is about finding ways to move forward with the eyesight a person has.

At Sights for Hope, we empower people to develop the confidence, strengthen the skills, and access the supports and solutions that help them adapt and succeed, however they see the world.

🦁 CRAFTING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Our client-led Monroe Sights for Hope Lions Club held its first craft fair fundraiser this weekend at Faith United Methodist Church in Stroudsburg, PA.

πŸ›οΈ The event brought together a full slate of vendors offering a variety of handmade crafts and other items, with all proceeds benefiting the club, which is sponsored by Sights for Hope.

πŸ’™ The fundraiser reflected the leadership, initiative, and community involvement of people who are blind or have visual impairments. Through opportunities like these, our clients demonstrate that eyesight does not define their potential to contribute, lead, and make a difference.

Thank you to the vendors, shoppers, and volunteers who supported the event.

πŸ°πŸ‘“ SCHEDULE A VISIT FROM C. WELL BUNNY
Our C. Well Bunny Goes to School program helps pre-kindergarten children learn about eye health and safety through an engaging, age-appropriate educational experience featuring everyone's favorite orange-glasses-wearing bunny.

The program is offered free of charge with our pre-kindergarten vision screening events in the Lehigh Valley and Monroe County. The educational presentation introduces children to the importance of healthy eyesight and helps prepare them for the screening experience.

πŸ‘€ Our free, quick, non-invasive vision screenings are available for children ages 6 months and up. The screenings help identify potential vision concerns, with referrals for comprehensive eye exams when needed.

πŸ“… A limited number of program bookings are available in the coming months. Childcare centers, early childhood education providers, libraries, and other community organizations are encouraged to contact our Prevention Team to schedule a screening event that includes C. Well Bunny Goes to School.

πŸŽ™οΈ THIS WEEK ON DEFEATING DARKNESS
This week’s episodes of the Defeating Darkness podcast, hosted by David Rimberg, Ph.D., explore ways that people who are blind or have visual impairments navigate the world around them.

πŸ•β€πŸ¦Ί In the second episode, Brian O'Neal from The Seeing Eye, Inc. explains how guide dogs are trained and matched with people, while co-host Paul Miller shares his experiences as the human partner of his guide dog, Felton.

πŸ“» WDIY EXTENDS DEFEATING DARKNESS THROUGH AUGUST 2027
We’ve only just begun – literally.

Following last Friday’s launch of the Defeating Darkness podcast, we are excited that WDIY 88.1 FM Lehigh Valley Public Radio has committed to broadcast 26 additional episodes through August 2027.

Hosted by David Rimberg, Ph.D., with co-host Paul Miller, Defeating Darkness explores the experiences, challenges, and possibilities that come with blindness and visual impairment through conversations with guests who bring their own perspectives and expertise.

Eight new episodes will air during November, followed by two episodes on the first Friday of each month from December through August. All episodes will stream after their premierea on popular podcast platforms – including Apple, Spotify, Amazon, iHeart, Pandora, and YouTube.

We thank WDIY for expanding its commitment to Defeating Darkness – and for helping these conversations reach an even wider audience.

πŸ“– EVERY STORY EXPANDS AWARENESS
As many of you know, October is recognized globally as Blindness Awareness Month – an opportunity to increase understanding of blindness and visual impairments, promote accessibility and inclusion, and recognize the experiences and accomplishments of people with vision loss.

At Sights for Hope, we see every day why greater awareness matters, and we applaud these efforts. As part of our own work, we also seek to raise awareness of how people with vision loss can strengthen skills, leverage supports, apply solutions, and build confidence to succeed in life – on their terms and however they see the world.

πŸ’™ In just the past few weeks, our clients have provided some powerful examples by hitting the open road during our Bikers for Sight Ride; by performing as members of the band Limitless; by getting up close with snakes and other wild creatures; and, in the case of one client with a Ph.D. who missed teaching, by deciding he wanted to do a podcast and helping us assemble the team to make it happen.

Throughout Blindness Awareness Month, we are proud to continue educating our community about the challenges of vision loss – and equally proud to keep sharing the skills, supports, solutions, confidence, and accomplishments that are also part of the story.

🐍 CONFIDENCE IN THE WILD
Building confidence sometimes means getting a little closer than you might normally choose.

Some of our clients did just that this week during a visit to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center in Slatington, PA, where they explored nature up close – touching plants, animals, and other natural objects and specimens along the way.

Experiences like these offer more than a chance to explore something new. They create small moments to step beyond what feels comfortable, discover what you can do, and build confidence for whatever comes next.
