Good morning sunshine!!

🐐🤍 Meet the newest little member of our barn family!

The vet estimates his age at just 4–6 months old, and this sweet boy has already had a rough start. Due to unexpected circumstances, his original owners were unable to care for him, and his future was to be slaughtered. Thankfully, a kindhearted person stepped in and brought him to us! 🥹

He arrived underweight and covered in lice, but he’s now receiving the treatment, nutrition, and LOVE he deserves! ❤️

His story is a gentle reminder that bringing an animal home is a lifelong responsibility, and having a backup care plan matters.

Here’s to second chances, happy endings, and a whole lot of goat cuddles! 🐐💕

Did you know horses can get melanoma too?🐴

Meet Tilly, our sweet gray mare here at Blue Ridge Rescue Barn. 💙

Although her coat may look white, her skin is dark underneath which is why she is called a gray horse. Gray horses have a much higher likelihood of developing melanomas as they age…more than 70% of gray horses over age 15 develop them.

Equine melanomas are commonly found around areas such as the base of the tail and head. They often begin as slow-growing skin tumors, and some horses can develop multiple tumors over time. While many remain relatively slow-growing, others can become invasive, which is why changes are something horse owners should discuss with their veterinarian!

Tilly has several melanomas, including ones around her tail that were noticed during routine care. For her, they are simply one more thing we stay aware of while making sure she remains comfortable, happy, and very loved.

And despite everything this girl has going on, including having impaired vision, she is one of the sweetest souls at the barn. 💙

Part of sanctuary life is learning the individual needs of every animal in our care, and sometimes that means learning things most people never knew about.

We’re not a petting zoo. We’re their home. 💙

And there’s something really beautiful about understanding the difference.

At Blue Ridge Rescue Barn, our mission isn’t to provide entertainment. It’s to provide a lifetime of safety, compassion, and exceptional care for rescued farm animals.

For some of our residents, that means learning to trust again. For others, it’s forming friendships, finding their place within the herd, or simply enjoying the quiet comfort of knowing they’re safe.

Every animal has a story. Every animal has individual needs. And every animal deserves to live life on their own terms. 🐴🌿

We love sharing their stories and welcoming our community through scheduled visits and special events. But their well-being will always come first.

Chris has been hard at work on a new addition to our goat house, and we couldn’t resist sharing a little behind-the-scenes peek at the progress!

There’s always something happening around here, and every improvement is another way we’re making this place feel more like home for the animals in our care.

Some of the most important work at the rescue happens quietly. 💙

Buckets get filled. Stalls get cleaned. Hay gets hauled. Animals get fed, loved on and cared for… and so much of it is made possible by our incredible volunteers.

These everyday chores may not always look glamorous, but they are a huge part of what helps keep Blue Ridge Rescue Barn running and allows our animals to receive the care they deserve. 🦆🐐🫏

To every volunteer who gives their time, energy and heart to this place: thank you. We truly could not do this without you. 💙

Tiny gear. Big purpose. 🐴🪰

If you’ve ever wondered why some of our horses and donkeys wear fly masks or leg guards, they’re part of the everyday ways we help keep our animals more comfortable during fly season.

Fly masks help create a barrier around sensitive areas like the eyes and face, while fly boots or leg guards can help reduce constant irritation around the lower legs. For some animals, these simple protective tools can make a noticeable difference in comfort during the warmer months.

A little preventative step that help keep the herd happy and comfortable. 💙
