Remembering Mrs. Tomoe Katagiri
In 1987, Mrs. Tomoe Katagiri carried a large box from Minnesota to Japan and delivered it to me at Hosshinji Monastery. I was deeply grateful—carrying my own luggage is enough, but she went far beyond. I promised to repay her kindness, and she said, “Chant the Ryōgon-shū for me every day after I die.” The Ryōgon-shū, or Śūraṅgama Sūtra, is a long, comprehensive teaching of Buddha Shakyamuni. It’s no surprise she wished to keep hearing it, even after her life ended.
On May 30, 2026, Mrs. Tomoe Katagiri passed away at 94. Though she later said she didn’t expect me to chant the Ryōgon-shū for her, I’d like to honor her by inviting you to join me in reading it now.
