At a time when gas prices are increasing and housing costs are on the rise, the current administration is yet again setting its sights on gutting protections for our trans and inters*x community. They are looking to remove critical protections meant to ensure the safety of any trans person in need of Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) funded programs - especially housing and domestic violence housing shelters.

The Equal Access Rule's protections against discrimination are critical to ensure safe access to shelter for transgender and inters*x people experiencing homelessness, survivors of violence, and those fleeing disasters.

This proposed rollback would encourage widespread discrimination when trans people need help the most, when facing the loss of their housing. The current regulations provide safety in HUD-funded programs, and Trump's proposed rule change would only leave trans and inters*x people less safe and more at risk.

If finalized, this proposal would:

Remove protections for s*xual orientation and gender identity
Allow providers to demand "evidence" of a person's s*x, such as documentation to verify a person's s*x
Redefine “s*x” in a way that enables discrimination
Attempt to override state, local, and Tribal protections
Make it difficult for providers to do their jobs and serve the people they are committed to helping.
These changes would make it harder and, in some cases, unsafe for transgender and inters*x people and other marginalized communities to access housing and services.
