The Indochinese rhesus macaque is a subspecies of the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), a highly adaptable Asian Old World monkey found in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and parts of China. Known for its reddish-brown fur, reddish-pink face, and medium-length tail, this intelligent and social primate is primarily terrestrial but also spends time in trees. It has a diverse diet of fruits, seeds, insects, and other small animals and is a skilled swimmer.

Key Characteristics Appearance:

They have reddish-brown or auburn fur, a reddish-pink face, a medium-length tail, and pads on each hind side as they are ground dwellers.

Size:

Adult males are larger than females, with males averaging around 17 lbs and females around 12 lbs. In captivity that weight can almost double depending on the diet, health issues, or exercise. Plus, since almost all are spayed or neutered , that can also cause higher weight gain.

Habitat:

They are found in a variety of habitats across Southeast Asia, from forests to areas with human communities. Primates as a whole are very food motivated, this is a dangerous mix in the wild when you add human feedings. The best way to feed them in the wild is through set up feeding stations instead if human hand feedings. In the end, when they roam into human populations , the primate always suffers sonce by then they have no fear if humans and see them as a food source.

Diet:

As generalist omnivores, their diet includes fruits, seeds, roots, herbs, insects, and sometimes even fish and crabs. Our males will eat meats such as roasted chicken which is a great source for protein. It’s not given daily as it’s not part of their natural diet but is incorporated moderately for increased nutrients, especially when they come in severely underweight.

Behavior:

They are highly social, living in groups and exhibiting complex social hierarchies. They are also intelligent, curious, and skilled swimmers. Non aggressive unless they feel threatened just as any animal would respond.

Natural healing:

Rhesus have incredible healing abilities. For serious injuries , there is a higher chance of less infection if they are in a troop as the other members will assist in keepinh the wound clean for safe healing.

Distribution

The Indochinese rhesus macaque is native to Southeast Asia. Its range includes Myanmar, northern Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and several Chinese provinces. In the US there are two wild caught and imported rhesus, FL (which lives naturally in a state park) and SC (which are sadly raised to be sold to labs).

Ecological Role and Adaptability
Adaptability:

Rhesus macaques are known for their ability to adapt to diverse environments and diets, which contributes to their wide distribution. Can captive rhesus adapt to the wild if released? Yes, if they have a strong troop structure I do believe they can, especially if like we do, they are offered the proper local vegetation to learn what is safe and what is not to consume. However , the reality is that is not a possibility as there is no where for them to go. They cannot be returned to their native country and cannot be released where they currently are located. Born in captivity, stay in captivity, in one way or another.

Social Structure:

They live in troops with complex social dynamics, with females typically staying in their birth troop and males leaving at maturity. The males will generally leave the troop permanently between 3 and 5 years old. This is when they are most vulnerable and alone until they find a breeding troop that accepts them or are accepted into a bachelor troop. Many can search for years and never be given the opportunity.

Normally, alpha males will be replaced every 4 to 5 years, so their offspring can breed with the new alphas for string genes as by then they are of breeding female age. There is documentation of alpha males staying for over 20 years, this is extremely rare and when the male passes, friction forms within the troop due to them not having to endure that replacement before. As they become placid. Some have been known to split into new troops when this occurs, usually the lower ranking rhesus from larger troops as what has recently been documented of the wild rhesus in Hong Kong.

Females by nature stay with the natal troops for life and automatically take on the rank of their mother at birth. They can be escalated in rank if a strong male alpha takes to them, however, it only lasts as long as his tenur. Once he is gone, she is quickly put back in place by the other females. It’s not normal for females to not only leave their natal troop but also their offspring but it can happen. This is something that should be studied more as it’s abnormal behavior.

Swimming:

They are skilled swimmers and can cross bodies of water up to a mile wide, often to find food or escape danger. Rhesus are able to hold their breathe for an extended amount of time in order to forage for vegetation below.
