Sertoma Club of North Augusta

Sertoma Club of North Augusta WHAT IS SERTOMA? Our primary service project is helping the more than 42 million people with speech and hearing disorders.

We are a dedicated group of professionals with a common goal of helping people through local charities and organizations in the CSRA, with a focus on the areas of speech and the hearing impaired. S E R T O M A

A curious word until three very important words come together in unison:

SERvice -TO - MAkind

Sertoma's primary service project is assisting the more than 50 million people with spe

ech, hearing and language disorders. Sertoma also sponsors community projects to promote freedom and democracy, to assist youth and to benefit a variety of other local community needs, as identified by the individual clubs. For visitors to our web site who are not members of a Sertoma Club, and who may have never heard of Sertoma, a few words of explanation might be helpful. Sertoma is an international organization of volunteer civic service clubs with over 20,000 members who belong to more than 700 Clubs in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States. Our Clubs also sponsor projects that promote freedom and democracy, youth causes, and many other local community needs identified by individual Clubs. While each Club is autonomous and selects its own sponsorships based on its own community needs, most Clubs participate to some degree in Sertoma International's central focus of Speech and Hearing sponsorship. Today, through a variety of fundraising projects, Sertomans worldwide raise in excess of $20 million annually, which they use in support of their various local and national sponsorships for community service. Many Clubs also participate in our "Freedom and Democracy" program by sponsoring local programs to promote patriotism; a favorite example is an essay contest for school children with prizes for the best essays on topics such as "What Freedom and Democracy Means to Me". Participants are invited to, and winners are announced at, a recognition dinner where the winners are presented awards for their efforts. The highest honor Sertoma bestows on a nonmember is the Service to Mankind Award recognizing outstanding volunteer community service. Each Club selects a winner, who competes with other Clubs' winners at the District, Regional and International levels. The top winner is announced at the International Convention. The award culminates in a trip to the winner's national capital, for a visit with the President or Prime Minister. The Sertoma Foundation, an international charity, believes that universal communication, whether heard, seen, or spoken, is the key to human understanding. The purpose of the Sertoma Foundation is to support the approved charitable and educational programs of our Sertoma Family through effective fundraising, investment of funds, and the distribution of proceeds. Through the financial support of Sertoma's programs, we become the catalysts for greater human understanding and SERVICE TO MANKIND. SERTOMA International's MISSION STATEMENT:
"SERTOMA exists for the high and noble purpose of SERVICE TO MANKIND by communication of thoughts, ideas and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom and democracy."

At the recent Sertoma meeting, Executive Director Jason Camis provided an update on the organization’s continued efforts to strengthen local clubs, grow membership, develop future leaders, and expand Sertoma’s impact through service projects and hearing health initiatives.

A key part of the update focused on the upcoming 2026 Sertoma International Board elections. Members are encouraged to consider serving in leadership roles as Sertoma prepares to elect three positions for terms running from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029: Southeastern Regional Director (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama), Great Lakes Regional Director (Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio), and International Vice President. Candidates must submit their intent to run by January 31, 2026.

The update also emphasized the importance of volunteer leadership, member engagement, and supporting local clubs as they continue serving their communities. Sertoma remains focused on its mission of “Service to Mankind,” with continued investment in hearing health programs, scholarships, leadership development, and community service opportunities. Members were encouraged to stay involved, support one another, and help ensure a strong future for the organization.

We also want to thank Piedmont Augusta for their continuous support of the North Augusta Sertoma Club and our mission to help those with hearing needs throughout our community.

Without their support, so much of the generosity and positive impact we are able to provide would not be possible.

Thank you, Piedmont Augusta, for everything you do for our community and for helping make a difference in the lives of so many.

Last night was a special evening at the Sertoma Club as we welcomed Merry Glenne Piccolino from Aiken County Public Schools to receive a $20,220 check from our Sertoma Club. These funds will help provide hearing devices for students with hearing issues, allowing them to better hear and learn in the classroom through technology that amplifies the teacher’s voice for those students.

Thank you to Aiken County Public Schools for everything you are doing for our students, and thank you to all of our Sertoma Club members who helped make this possible.

114 years ago today, a movement centered on one idea began: service to others.

On April 11, 1912, a small group gathered in Kansas City for the first meeting of what would eventually become Sertoma International. What started as a simple concept has grown into a lasting legacy of giving back and strengthening communities.

That mission is still alive and well today—especially here in North Augusta.

Whether it’s supporting hearing health or stepping up for local needs, Sertoma’s impact is felt through the people who continue to serve. It’s a reminder that real change starts at the community level, with people willing to show up and make a difference.

Celebrating this milestone today, and grateful for those carrying that mission forward right here in North Augusta.

The Sertoma Club of North Augusta continues to make a real impact in our community.

Recently, the club proudly presented a $4,000 donation to Piedmont Augusta Speech and Hearing—supporting critical services that help individuals communicate, connect, and live better every day.

We were honored to have Brandi Morrison, Director of Rehab Services, and Dr. Gloria Gardner, Audiologist, representing Piedmont Augusta Speech and Hearing. Their work is changing lives across our region, and it’s a privilege to support their mission.

Even more powerful—this isn’t new.

Since 1992, the Sertoma Club of North Augusta has contributed over $308,000 to Piedmont Augusta Speech and Hearing.

That’s more than just a number.
That’s decades of impact.
That’s lives improved, families supported, and a community that shows up for one another.

Proud to be part of something that continues to give back in such a meaningful way.

NORTH AUGUSTA — The North Augusta Sertoma Club celebrates 55 years in August, and it’s a birthday that might just offer its own candles on the cake: club members are hoping to break ground on a permanent meeting place, one that’s all their own, by the end of the year.

Service to Mankind — as the very name “Sertoma” stands for — is at the core of what the club does, the North Augusta chapter alone having given out some $1.4 million over just the past 15 years.

That money has largely been in support of Piedmont Augusta Speech and Hearing Center; the roots of Sertoma as a national organization go back to 1912, and the organization was founded on advocacy for the speech and hearing impaired.

Reasons that club members give for their being a part of Sertoma here in North Augusta are many, each one rolling into the next and becoming a multilayered pull.

There’s the reward, current Chair Justin Howard said, in meeting those whose lives have changed for the better because of the work Sertoma has done.

There’s the social aspect and professional networking, combined with real impact made, Colen Lindell said.

David Hewitt, secretary since 2007, summarized with humor that a lot of folks join “because they’re altruistic and thirsty.”

But it all started back in 1971 with a group of 25 people, maybe a few more, who just wanted “to make some money and then give it away.”

This from John Morris, one of the club’s founding members.

Morris said that in all these 55 years, it’s the relationship with Piedmont that has stood out most to him. That, and the club ranking as the largest Sertoma club at one point, with more than 170 members.

North Augusta Sertomans began working closely with Piedmont, at the time University Hospital, in the 1990s, over time raising enormous sums of money that helped fund the hospital’s Speech and Hearing Center on Augusta’s Harper Street.

“Going to Piedmont Speech and Hearing Center and having those families talk to us and the mothers and children crying and telling us the difference it made in their kids’ lives where, basically, some of them were not able to function in school and they just seemed to be drowning, with no help, and to see them graduating college and becoming leaders in their own fields... it’s rewarding,” Chair Howard said.

North Augusta Sertoma Club got going in 1971. Its membership has placed it in the top Sertoma clubs by size, and it’s one that spans generations.
