🤖⚖️ “Destroying trust is very easy, and building it is very hard.”

AI, who sets the limits? That is the question on the cover of the September issue of Comunicações, the magazine of APDC featuring an extended interview with Inês Lynce, President of INESC-ID’s Board of Directors and Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico.

For Inês Lynce, the loss of trust is the most serious risk AI poses. She questions the concentration of power in a handful of tech companies, considers industry self-regulation unrealistic, and stresses the need to keep humans in control.

The researcher also discusses SAIL – Sustainable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, a €27.2 million project led by INESC-ID with European and national funding, in partnership with Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and DFKI. “Having a project of this quality and scale for six years is very appealing,” she says. “It’s once in a lifetime, so we have to make the most of it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she talks about her path into computer engineering, how she became the first woman to lead INESC-ID in 2020, and the impact of AI on young people entering the job market.

🤖🐑 Do Chatbots Dream of Electric Sheep?

In a recent opinion piece for Público, Joaquim Jorge, INESC-ID researcher, reflects on the growing tendency to view large language models (LLMs) as emotional or conscious entities.

Drawing on Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, which inspired Blade Runner, the researcher explores humanity’s tendency to attribute human characteristics to machines. Furthermore, he stresses that the real challenge lies on determining who is accountable for decisions made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

INESC-ID Annual Meeting 2026: AI in research, lessons from i3S and a second Town Hall

On October 22, nearly 200 members of our community gathered at MS Aparthotel Lisboa, for a full day dedicated to INESC-ID’s present and future. The venue was close to Lisbon, but its gardens and sea view gave the day the feel of a retreat.

The programme featured:

- Opening remarks by INESC-ID President Inês Lynce, followed by updates from Executive Committee President Miguel Pupo Correia and Executive Committee members Joao Paulo Carvalho and Nuno Roma
- Presentations from our Innovation Management, Knowledge Transfer and Technological Infrastructures offices: Silvia Castro, Sandra Aresta and David Martins de Matos
- An enthusiastic round table on the use of AI in research, moderated by Scientific Council President Rodrigo Rodrigues, with Ana Paiva, José Fragoso Santos, Emanuel Goncalves and Rui Ribeiro
- A guest talk by Claudio Sunkel, Director of i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, on how the institute was created and the good practices behind its success
- The second edition of our Town Hall, an open Q&A with our leadership about international reach, resources for researchers and students, and the future of our new facilities.

🏛️🇪🇺 What if you could visit an ancient Roman city and meet the people who once lived there?

That’s the idea behind Narratia - ECCCH, a new Horizon Europe project recently joined by INESC-ID. The project will combine generative AI and immersive technologies to turn heritage visits into personalised stories, where visitors meet historical characters on location.

Coordinated by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and bringing together 13 partners from seven countries, NARRATIA held its kick-off in September in Madrid and Cuenca. Six pilots will test the approach, from prehistoric rock art in Valle Camonica to the industrial heritage of Tampere.

Our participation is led by Rui Prada, researcher at INESC-ID’s GAIPS Lab and Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico. Within the consortium, we will develop the gameplay components of the experience and help build the generative AI engine that creates the stories.

🔐 How can everyday connected devices become a cybersecurity risk?

In a recent interview with CNN Portugal, Miguel Pupo Correia, INESC-ID researcher and President of the Executive Committee, commented on the cyberattack that affected supermarket chains across Europe.

He explained how internet-connected equipment can become vulnerable to malicious exploitation, and reflected on possible motivations behind the attack, and measures that could help prevent similar incidents.

The attack followed another cybersecurity breach, which took place last week, involving an IT company that had previously provided services to the Portuguese Intelligence Information System (SIRP).

🌟 Following the elections at the EurAI General Assembly, Ana Paiva, INESC-ID researcher, joins the EurAI Board as the 18th President, becoming the second woman to hold the position since the creation of the association.
