🧮💻 FLoC 2026: Lisbon just hosted the world's biggest logic and computer science conference, for the first time in Portugal.

FLoC 2026 closed last week after two intense weeks that brought together the world's leading international conferences in mathematical logic and computer science, with over 2100 participants from 70 countries, across ten conferences, 86 workshops and two summer schools at Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.

"It was the culmination of almost four years of work, from the initial bid through to closing the doors on the last day," said Nuno Lopes, who served as the conference's Organisation Chair.

The event was co-organised by Instituto Superior Técnico and INESC-ID, with our researchers holding key roles across the organisation, including Nuno Lopes as Organisation Chair.

🤖🧑‍🎓 INESC-ID Connects Students and Industry at ELLIS Doctoral Symposium 2026!

As a partner institution in ELLIS Unit Lisbon, INESC-ID helped host more than 100 PhD students, researchers and industry experts at Instituto Superior Técnico from 27–30 July, four days dedicated to Trustworthy AI.

Our PhD students Regina Duarte and Beatriz Vieira represented INESC-ID at the symposium's Industry Fair, drawing interest from attendees exploring postdoctoral opportunities and research collaborations.

Among the 18 companies and organisations at the Fair were Sword Health, Neuralshift/Affine and Feedzai. Ana Paiva, INESC-ID researcher and Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, delivered a keynote talk, while researcher Emanuel Gonçalves spoke as an Early Career Speaker.

🧑‍💻 The 16th Lisbon Machine Learning Summer School (LxMLS 2026) wrapped up last week after six days of lectures, labs, and debate on the future of machine learning and natural language processing.

LxMLS is organised by Instituto Superior Técnico, INESC-ID, Instituto de Telecomunicações, LUMLIS, Zendesk, and IBM Research, with Isabel Trancoso, INESC-ID researcher and retired full professor at Técnico, and Arlindo Oliveira, INESC-ID researcher and INESC president, serving on the Steering Committee.

Hosted at Técnico, the programme combined theory with hands-on practice.
A highlight was the debate "From Tokens to Thoughts: The Changing Roles of Language and Learning", moderated by Isabel Trancoso and featuring Arlindo Oliveira, Adèle Ribeiro (RWTH Aachen University), Mario Figueiredo (Instituto de Telecomunicações) and Raquel Fernández (University of Amsterdam & EU Joint Research Centre).

🇪🇺🎓 There's a growing gap between AI's rapid transformation of industries and public services and the capacity of education systems to keep pace.

INESC-ID has joined AISHA – European AI Skills Academy, a Digital Europe Programme initiative to build a pan-European ecosystem of AI education and training, with a focus on Generative AI.

Coordinated by Inspiring Futures Europe and bringing together 42 partners across Europe, AISHA formally launched in May. Within the consortium, we lead the work on policy, accreditation and skills-mapping, ensuring AISHA's qualifications are recognised across Europe and that the project's findings inform EU policy long after the grant period ends.

Inês Lynce, INESC-ID researcher, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, and President of our Board of Directors, leads our participation. INESC Brussels Hub will be central to our policy engagement work.

🏅 Ana Paiva, INESC-ID senior researcher and full professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, has been elected a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, joining the 8th Section – Information Sciences and Technologies!

The election highlights the institute’s sustained role and influence in national science policy and academic leadership, following recent appointments of other INESC-ID researchers, including Isabel Trancoso, Arlindo Oliveira, and José Borbinha.

The official swearing-in ceremony was held on 2 July.

Founded in 1779, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences promotes interdisciplinary research, cultural heritage, public education, and civic dialogue, while also serving as an official advisory body to the Portuguese state in matters of language and scientific policy.

Congratulations!

🤖🇵🇹 AMALIA, the first Large Language Model developed specifically for European Portuguese, was officially presented on 1 July at the Técnico Innovation Center.

Coordinated by Agência para a Reforma Tecnológica do Estado (ARTE) and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), and supported by PRR funding, AMALIA aims to help preserve and strengthen the Portuguese language across areas like education, media, science, culture, and public services. INESC‑ID's research team, led by Alberto Abad, contributed with expertise focused on speech processing and audio‑to‑text conversion.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Fernando Alexandre, Minister for Education, Science and Innovation, and Gonçalo Matias, Deputy Minister for State Reform, who highlighted the project’s significance and the value of the academic community involved.

🌟🛰️ There’s a Starman waiting in the sky

After two years in orbit, the ISTSat-1 is now expecting company, as IST NanoSatLab, in which INESC-ID participates, prepares two new missions to join it in space:

📍"Argus" consists of two CubeSats that will test innovative techniques with on-board AI to determine the position and orientation of satellites in orbit. Developed by IST NanosatLab and Carnegie Mellon University, it is expected to launch this October.

📶 "5G Nanosatellite" is currently under development by NanoSatLab, Altice Labs and the University of Luxembourg and planned for completion in 2029. Once in orbit, it will aim to establish a direct communication link between a low-Earth orbit satellite and the terrestrial 5G network.

ISTSat-1 was launched on 9 July 2024, with the goal to test its ability to detect aircrafts in remote areas. The project and IST NanoSatLab brought together INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), the Mechanical Engineering Institute (IDMEC) and the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa).

🇪🇺🧬 We are happy to share that INESC-ID is a partner in PRECISE, a new pan-European initiative to predict, rather than simply catalogue, cancer vulnerabilities, formally launched today with a commentary in Nature Genetics. The consortium is coordinated by Francesco Iorio at Human Technopole and Mathew Garnett at Wellcome Sanger Institute.

Our contribution is led by INESC-ID researcher Emanuel Gonçalves and professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, whose work focuses on AI/ML approaches to functional genetic screens.

"Within PRECISE, INESC-ID has the opportunity to develop AI/ML models to explore the vast space of potential combinatorial treatments and learn from these to iteratively help design more informative experiments that in turn further improve our predictive models," says Emanuel Gonçalves. "This is key for future developments to explore novel, effective and precise cancer treatments."
