🔋🚗 After 48 months EV4EU wrapped up on 19 May at the Transportation Research Arena in Budapest!

The final session, hosted by INESC‑ID researcher Ana Rita Nunes, brought together partners and stakeholders to review project outcomes and solutions to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Europe.

One of the event's highlights was the premiere of the final overview video, where project coordinator and INESC-ID researcher Hugo Morais, presents the main developments across the four demo sites.

Composed of four sessions, two of which were moderated by INESC-ID's Cindy P. Guzman and Mariana Carmo, this final discussion underlined the high technical feasibility of V2X, its added value over smart charging, the need for strong data infrastructure, and smoother municipal licensing.

💬 "EV4EU shows that V2X is not a concept of the future — it is here, it has been tested, and it is ready to scale," said Hugo Morais. Two key technologies are now moving towards the market: a Smart Charging platform, developed and tested by INESC-ID, and a bidirectional charging solution for condominiums, both expected to gain traction from 2027.

⚡🔌 INESC-ID and DEEC marked the Energy Day 2026 at the Técnico Innovation Center (TIC) and celebrated the opening of the new Energy Dream Lab!

The program began with the launch of the joint INESC‑ID and Técnico lab, with contributions from Hugo Morais, Pedro Carvalho, Pedro Costa, Nuno Horta, and Pedro Amaral, and the presence of several INESC‑ID and DEEC representatives, including president of INESC-ID's Board of Directors, Inês Lynce.

The new lab, developed with the support of the Aliança para a Transição Energética (ATE) and located in the Electricity Pavilion, will support major projects like EV4EU, AHEAD, SHIFT2DC, U2Demo, PVSmile, and SOLAR‑MOVE, while improving learning conditions for students and boosting collaboration with companies.

At TIC, Jean Barroca, Secretary of State for Energy, delivered a keynote on grid resilience and energy availability, followed by panels on "Storage Market", "Resilience and the Power Grid", and "Smart Cities and Smart Grids".

The day ended with the presentation of the Engenheiro Ivo Gonçalves Merit Award and the Professor Sucena Paiva Award, a final look at the Energy Dream Lab and closing remarks by Técnico president, Rogério Colaço.

💭 Could excessive use of generative AI cause cognitive atrophy, even among programmers? That's one of the challenges Arlindo Oliveira adresses in the seventh episode of ECO's "Podcast.IA".

The INESC-ID researcher and President of the INESC group, opened the episode with an overview of the current state of AI in Europe, emphasising the importance of aligning technological progress with quality of life, human rights and a sensible use of AI.

In the second part of the episode, Inês Lynce, researcher and President of the Board of Directors at INESC-ID, introduced SAIL, a Horizon Europe project with €27.2 million in funding to create a centre dedicated to sustainable AI. "This is a unique opportunity, given the funding it carries, to have an impact at national and international level that is different," added Inês Lynce, describing SAIL as a capacity-building project, one that upgrades an institution and gives it a focused mission.

💻🤖 Improving LLM code generation and humanoid domestic robots: INESC-ID secures two AI grants from CMU Portugal and UT Austin Portugal.

We have been awarded two research grants under the 2025 exploratory calls of the CMU Portugal and UT Austin Portugal Program, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), and selected from 36 and 41 applications respectively, among a total of 15 projects approved across both programmes.

José Fragoso Santos leads the project "Quantitative Program Analysis for Improving LLM Code Generation", which addresses a growing risk in software development: LLMs deployed for coding tasks still generate code with subtle bugs and security vulnerabilities. The project will investigate RLSAF, a new approach that trains LLMs to account for the semantic properties of the code they produce.

Bruno Martins leads the project "EXPlanation and ObseRvation for HumanOid DOmestic RObots (EXPLOR-HODOR)", which aims to develop an LLM-based AI system for robot cognition and interaction, specialised in domestic tasks and collaboration with humans.

“Without digitalisation, we do not have control. And if we don't have control, we don't have intelligence. And if we don't have intelligence, we don't have benefits."

⚡ Hugo Morais, researcher at INESC‑ID was featured on the EU Energy Projects podcast, by Enlit, to talk about the evolving European energy landscape and the major Horizon Europe projects he’s coordinating, EV4EU, Shift2DC, and U2Demo.

🎯 The shared goal between these projects? Making our energy system cleaner, more flexible, and easier to manage.

🔌 Throughout the episode it was also explored how digital tools are essential to balance the energy needs of smart buildings and electric mobility, stressing the importance of strong digital infrastructure and proper service standardisation.

👥 Additionally, the researcher emphasised how putting users at the centre is crucial to ensure electric vehicles deliver real benefits to the power grid.
