And it’s a wrap!
Sining Galing Art Enrichment Workshop is done. For 3 Saturdays, art facilitators conducted workshops for the children (ages 3 yo to 20 yo) of Heart of Mary Villa (HMV), Religious of the Good Shepherd. Our encounters with these kids ignited in us a new way of empathic teaching. The hands-on and informal teaching allowed them to explore their creativity.
What endears us is how thankful they are after each session, telling us how much they have learned. More importantly, knowing that these arts and crafts made them happy and engaged, and said that they can continue doing these even after they leave HMV, inspire us to do better.
These weekly sessions gave us the opportunity to listen to what they cannot say verbally but were able to tell through their works. In hindsight, as art facilitators, we were challenged on how to create modules that will allow them to creatively share their thoughts through arts. These kids, having been robbed with a happy youth, broken by people they trusted, extracted from the community they thought was safe, and hurt by the harsh realities of life - yet, seeing their works knocked us off our senses - that they can still hope for a better life. Who are we to deny them of this lifeline? In a judgmental society, how can they survive if we do not help them in our own little way? So we give back through our talents and resources, to prepare and equip them as they heal.
We walked the talk - the gift you have received, gift as a gift. As Thomasian educators, we carry with us the teachings of Papa Francisco aka Lolo Kiko - think, do, feel.
It takes a village to raise a child. And when a child is lost, we give them a new path to take so they can find their way back home. Like a lotus flower, may these kids bloom again after all the hardships, and rise from the muddy waters.
This is our story. It has been an endearing journey. Thank you for the opportunity.🪷
