Nazh-Far Mariwa Berganio, Founding President of Ako Bakwit, joined 11 fellow members of the Global IDP Advisory Group in a significant meeting with the UNHCR High Commissioner, Dr. Barham Salih. He is also the former President of the Republic of Iraq from 2018 to 2022.

Speaking from experience of displacement, the group shared what communities face in emergencies and in protracted displacement. They called for leadership that puts IDPs — especially youth and IDP-led groups — at the center of response and solutions.

The High Commissioner gave a firm pledge: IDP protection is non-negotiable for UNHCR. He also stressed the need to deliver protection-centered durable solutions and to strengthen IDP participation in line with the SG’s Action Agenda.

The clear message from the Advisory Group: Nothing about us, without us. Direct, flexible, and predictable support to IDP-led organizations is needed now.

Ako Bakwit was honored to join the budget consultation organized by the office of Akbayan Partylist Representative Dadah Kiram Ismula.

Representing Ako Bakwit were Founding President and UNHCR Global IDP Advisory Group Member Nazh-Far Mariwa Berganio and Ako Bakwit Director Baiminang A. Madale.

The consultation aimed to:

1. Open a formal space for the Bangsamoro community to ensure our voices are included in the national budget

2. Identify priority programs on education, health, livelihood, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation

3. Strengthen accountability and transparency in government resource allocation for Muslim communities

At Ako Bakwit, we believe that displaced and marginalized Bangsamoro communities must be part of budget conversations. Because when the budget listens, people are served well.
