KOREANS PRAISING THE PHILIPPINES

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is receiving strong praise from South Korean netizens after his fiery response to a Chinese note during the 2026 Seoul Defense Dialogue.

While speaking at the forum, Teodoro was handed a note from a Chinese military attaché disputing the 2016 international arbitration ruling on the South China Sea. He read it aloud before pushing back with the now-viral line, “Of course, because you lost.”

Teodoro also called the move disrespectful to South Korea and the international forum, describing China’s actions as “coercion, bullying and aggression.” His response drew applause and quickly spread online.

South Korean commenters praised Teodoro for refusing to be intimidated, with some calling him a “badass” and saying they were “jealous of the Philippines” for having a defense chief willing to stand up to China. Others criticized what they viewed as South Korea’s overly accommodating approach toward Beijing.

The incident comes amid continued tensions between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea.
