Stepping Up was our theme for tonight's Toastmasters meeting, expertly led by our own Toastmaster extraordinaire, Robin.

Robin ran a fantastic evening, seamlessly covering multiple roles while keeping the meeting engaging, thought-provoking, educational, and full of laughs.

We enjoyed three inspiring prepared speeches from Huia, Lisa, and Michael, followed by a great round of Table Topics hosted by Gavin.

It was also wonderful to welcome our three guests—Clare, Sue, and Keith—who each shared why they came along. Whether it was to build confidence in the workplace, find the courage to speak at a wedding or funeral, or simply learn to tell their story, every journey was unique and inspiring.

To finish the evening, Gavin held an awards ceremony of his own, taking home a whole heap of certificates. Congratulations, Gavin, on all your accomplishments and achievements!

Meet Huia Dunn and hear why she decided to join Toastmasters Whangārei.

"My Toastmasters journey began around a bonfire in Ruatangata at my cousin's 30th birthday. I was chatting with my uncle, Spence, an active member of our club, and asked him, 'What is Toastmasters, and should I come along?'

At the time, I'd just started my real estate papers and wanted to do everything I could to give myself the best chance of succeeding. He suggested I come to a meeting and see if it was the right fit.

I'd always been naturally confident, but I wanted to become a clearer communicator, a better listener, and develop the skills to stand out in a competitive industry.

Today, I'm proud to say I was awarded Rookie of the Year after selling 23 properties in my first year in real estate. My original goal was to sell 12.

I genuinely believe Toastmasters played a big part in that success.

It's given me a supportive environment where I've grown in confidence, strengthened my communication skills, and learned how to connect with people using my down-to-earth approach.
