The Apanui Saltmarsh Care Group volunteers meet on the second Saturday of each month, weather permitting, at 8.00 am to collect rubbish from the Whakatane river bank and nearby areas.

Only four people braved the cold morning for yesterday's monthly clean-up. One of us managed to fill three rubbish bags. As we didn't have a May clean-up due to the weather, this was the first time to survey the damage caused by Cyclone Vaianu in mid-April. Notably the area behind the amphitheatre had been hard hit with many uprooted trees. I guess the District Council staff will get round to clearing the area in due course.

The Apanui Saltmarsh Care Group's monthly clean up will be held on Saturday 13 June. Volunteers should meet by 8am in the car park on the corner of McAlister and Beach Streets and wear gumboots or suitable footwear. All equipment is provided.
The weather forecast is OK at the minute, but if it changes for the worse, listen to Radio 1XX just after 7am for a cancellation notice. Regulars will be emailed.

Today's May clean-up is cancelled. It may have stopped raining but it will be very wet underfoot and in the undergrowth. Hopefully, we shall see you at the next clean-up on Saturday 13 June.

Only five people braved this morning's autumn mists to come and do our monthly cleanup. The find of the day was a remote control toy car. Who said there was a recession? The bush drinkers have moved from beer to vodka RTDs.

12 people turned out for today's clean-up. It was already warm at 8am. Luckily, there wasn't a lot of rubbish.
