These little legends are shy and cautious, with sharp eyes for any hint of danger. They stay close to cover and take off at the first sign of a threat - which along with introduced predators, is why they’re now mostly found on predator-free islands and sanctuaries.

Did you know that two Tīeke guided Mataatua through the kohu (mist) to Whakatāne?

Legend says Mumuhou and Takeretou, a pair of Tīeke, helped the Mataatua waka find it’s way. These manu aren’t just kaiārahi (guides), they’re a tohu - an indicator species that thrive only in the most pristine (and pest-free) forest habitats.

Today, Tīeke are hard to find. They survive mainly on predator-free islands like Moutohorā (Whale Island). Our vision? To hear their chatter in the heart of Whakatāne once again.

This is just one of the reasons why we’re backing Tīeke as Bird of the Year 2025, and why we think you should too!
