• The Salvation Army After living through the Christchurch earthquakes, I know a bit what it is like to live in a broken city where many buildings had been reduced to rubble. However, living in a broken city with a faceless enemy trying to kill you takes
that to completely new and horrifying level. Seeing the awful images from Ukraine over the past month has sickened me, and left me with a desire to see if I can do something, however tiny, to try and help. For this reason, I decided to get some t-shirts printed with a simple message on it: Kia Kaha Urkaine. I hope to sell these on TradeMe, and all money raised will be send to various NGOs in Ukraine. My motivation for doing this, instead of simply donating money directly, also reflects my recollections from the early days in Christchurch, when many of the city’s residents were walking around somewhat punch drunk from what had happened. One of the most powerful recollections I have of those times was seeing the many “Kia Kaha Christchurch” stickers and adverts appearing on media (both mainstream and social), and how this gave many of us a strong sense of unity with the rest of the country that we were indeed not alone. So, one of my wildest dreams would be for someone in Ukraine, or some displaced Ukrainian family safe in some anonymous town in Europe to be able to see via social media that people on the other side of the world in Aotearoa/New Zealand are prepared to show their support and compassion. Even if it brings a glimpse of hope to these people this exercise would have been worthwhile. If successful I have other ideas for other designs, as well as the possibility of printing out some hoodies etc. But all this depends on your support, and willingness to dig into not only your wallets, but to also show that you support the people of Ukraine by sending images of you wearing these items.
