🏏Celebrating 100 years of sporting ties between New Zealand and India🏑

From a 1926 hockey tour that drew an estimated 25,000 spectators to Eden Park, to cricket contests and Himalayan mountaineering expeditions, sport has been part of the New Zealand–India relationship for a century.

To mark 100 years of official sporting ties, the Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono has released "A Century of Sporting Ties: Celebrating unity through sports between New Zealand and India."

The report is part of a year of celebrations marking the centenary, led by Sport New Zealand.

The report traces the evolution of the sporting relationship through three pivotal sporting codes: hockey, cricket and mountaineering, while also exploring the development of the relationship through other sports such as squash and tennis.

🏏Are you a New Zealand sports leader looking to explore partnership and collaboration opportunities in Asia?🏑

The Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Sports Leaders Fund supports New Zealand sports leaders to build cultural confidence, regional insight and purposeful connections to engage effectively across Asia’s sporting landscape.

Up to four grants will be awarded, with two specifically for travel to India.

📢 Applications are now open for the India Music Delegation 2027.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is working with NZ Music Commission and Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ) to bring experienced and emerging New Zealand music leaders to Mumbai, India, from 6–13 February 2027.

India is home to a huge range of music scenes, languages and audiences, with Mumbai offering a gateway into one of the world’s major entertainment industries.

The delegation will centre on IIMW - India International Music Week, with participants attending conferences, industry meetings and site visits to explore India’s music sector, make connections and build relationships with industry professionals.

The 2026 intake brings together a diverse mix of talent, experience and curiosity about Asia, and marks the network’s 20th year.

Since 2006, more than 500 New Zealanders have joined the network, building their skills and strengthening their connections with Asia.

🌏Want to take your sports career to Asia?✈️

Two New Zealand interns will spend three months in Kuala Lumpur, gaining hands-on experience with Malaysia’s National Sports Council (NSC) and National Sports Institute (NSI).

The Asia New Zealand Foundation’s sports internships give young New Zealanders the opportunity to work with leading sports organisations in Asia, build industry connections, and gain insights into the people, culture and sporting sector of their host country.

The programme is open to third- and fourth-year students and recent graduates studying sport, sports science, sports management, coaching or a related field.

We recently farewelled Datuk Nicol David, eight-time world champion of squash, and Mariana de Reyes, CEO of the Nicol David Organisation, following their week in New Zealand.

Nicol and Mariana connected with New Zealand sports leaders and organisations, sharing ideas on how to boost physical engagement among school children.

It was fantastic to host them and hear more about their work with Malaysian schools, while also exploring what New Zealand can learn from their experience.

New Zealanders know Bali fairly well, but how well do we know the rest of Indonesia?🤔

🌏With a population of around 280 million, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country and an important regional power in Southeast Asia. Yet despite its size and influence, Indonesia remains relatively unfamiliar to many New Zealanders.

Recently, one young New Zealander got the chance to see a very different side of Indonesia.

Victoria University commerce student Kyran Lockwood spent three months working in Jakarta, making the most of his time outside the office. From joining a local football team to attending an Indonesian wedding, Kyran's time in Indonesia took him well beyond the usual tourist experience.

🏐Sport is opening doors to stronger connections between New Zealand and Malaysia.

That’s the focus of this visit by Datuk Nicol David, former world No. 1 and eight-time world squash champion, and Mariana De Reyes, CEO of the Nicol David Organisation, who are in New Zealand to meet with sporting organisations and leaders and explore opportunities for greater exchange.

Yesterday, Nicol and Mariana visited The Blues Charitable Trust and High Performance Sport New Zealand in Auckland.

At the Blues Charitable Trust, hosted by Rob Woodley ONZM and Rose-Marie Nathan, with Dame Susan Devoy also joining the conversation, the group shared experiences and explored opportunities for collaboration around wellbeing, education for young people and leadership through sport.

The conversation continued at High Performance Sport New Zealand, where Christine Arthur shared insights into their Performance Life Coach programme and the importance of preparing athletes for transitions to support their ongoing wellbeing.

An opportunity has come up for a programme coordinator to join the team at the Asia New Zealand Foundation in our Auckland office.

This position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the Foundation's Leadership Network programme, with a strong focus on planning, logistics, and organisation. This is a proactive, hands-on role that requires a process-oriented and methodical approach, broad communication skills, and frequent collaboration with others in the organisation.
