Great to see Atlas Concrete and Fulton Hogan at work on the Beach Haven Road rehabilitation project.

Concrete roads deliver long-term benefits through strength, durability and resilience, providing high-performing surfaces designed to stand up to heavy traffic demands while delivering value over their whole life.

The project is another strong example of concrete being used to deliver infrastructure built for the future, with the renewed surface designed to provide reliable long-term performance for the local community.

As road controlling authorities and contractors place greater focus on whole-of-life outcomes, concrete pavements offer compelling advantages through reduced maintenance requirements, long service life and strong durability performance.

Over the past few weeks, Concrete NZ has revisited the seven key levers from the New Zealand cement and concrete industry’s 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap.

Together, these levers show that decarbonising our sector is not reliant on a single solution - it’s a coordinated effort across the entire value chain, from clinker and cement through to design, construction, and end-of-life.

The next step is turning strategy into action.

Concrete NZ’s Transformation to a Low-Carbon Concrete Industry report, to be released shortly, will help do just that - providing practical guidance to support uptake and accelerate progress.

Decarbonisation is achievable - and it’s already underway.

Engineers and designers on the North Shore, Auckland and across Northland are encouraged to register now for the second seminar in Concrete NZ’s Reinforced Concrete Diaphragm Design series, taking place at North Harbour Stadium on Thursday 4 June.

Based on the Concrete NZ Red Book worked example (Section B4), this practical seminar provides a detailed walkthrough of diaphragm design for medium-rise buildings, including NZS 3101 and NZS 1170.5 compliance, diaphragm force determination, modelling approaches, and reinforcement detailing.

Presented by Alistair Russell and Des Bull of Holmes Group, this is a valuable technical session for those working with concrete structures. Plus, take advantage of group discounts for multiple registrations from the same organisation.

The latest issue of Concrete magazine outlines Concrete NZ’s move to simplify and modernise its Associate membership structure.

The new two-tier framework - Platinum Associate Member and Associate Member - will replace the existing Cement, Masonry, Precast, Readymix and Reinforcing Associate categories, along with the legacy Gold, Silver and Bronze memberships.

The changes reflect a more integrated construction industry and provide a clearer, more flexible model for engagement across the concrete sector.

Carbon Capture & Utilisation & Storage (CCU) and Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS) are important to achieving net zero.

The cement and concrete industry’s 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap identifies them as critical long-term solutions, particularly for emissions from the chemical process of cement production.

While still emerging in New Zealand, global developments are progressing rapidly - and the sector will play a role in enabling uptake.

The upcoming Concrete NZ report, Transformation to a Low-Carbon Concrete Industry, will provide clearer guidance to help accelerate uptake.

The latest issue of Concrete NZ's Concrete magazine highlights the important role industry associations play in building long-term capability across the construction sector.

Concrete NZ continues to support practical, Standards-based training through courses including:

• Concrete Construction Course
• Concrete Masonry Course
• Concrete Technicians Course
• Weathertight Concrete Construction Course

The article also highlights Concrete NZ’s ongoing collaboration with Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) to support vocational pathways and strengthen workforce capability across the concrete and wider construction industry.

Newly released Statistics NZ figures show some encouraging signs for the construction sector, with ready-mixed concrete production increasing in the March 2026 quarter.

869,652 cubic metres of ready-mixed concrete was produced during the quarter – up 1.8% compared with March 2025.

Seasonally adjusted volumes also continued to improve, rising 1.1% in the March 2026 quarter following a 2.7% increase in the December 2025 quarter.

While challenges and uncertainty remain across the market, the latest figures suggest parts of the sector are beginning to stabilise after a difficult period.

Concrete has a unique ability to reabsorb CO₂ over time.

Recognised in the cement and concrete industry’s 2050 Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap and by the IPCC, this process - known as carbon uptake - permanently removes CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Opportunities also exist to enhance uptake through recycling and end-of-life processes.

Concrete NZ’s soon to be published Transformation to a Low-Carbon Concrete Industry report will explore this significant process is greater detail.
